Publication number: 20080197181Abstract: A container for packaging a product is provided. The container is formed from a continuous blank of sheet material having an internal surface and an opposing external surface. The container includes a top panel having a top edge, a bottom edge, and opposing side edges. The container further includes a hinge panel connected to the bottom edge of the top panel along a first fold line, a rear panel connected to the hinge panel along a second fold line and connected to the top panel, and a first adhesive coating applied on the internal surface of the rear panel adjacent to the opposing side edges and the bottom edge defining a perimeter of a compartment for receiving a product. Moreover, after the product is placed in the compartment, the top panel and the rear panel are folded about the hinge panel such that at least a portion of the internal surfaces of the top and rear panels are attached to one another. A method of constructing the same is also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 19, 2007Publication date: August 21, 2008Inventor: Karl M. Ritter

Patent number: 6530516Abstract: A carton is provided with an automatic bottom panel, which extends from a side panel, and has two converging reverse-scored fold lines, which extend outwardly from the side panel. One end flap featuring an angled score is folded up from the automatic bottom panel and is glued to its body panel. Adhesive is applied only above the diagonal folding score, leaving the unglued section free to fold in reverse in the bottom formation. The other end panel bottom flap is folded inwardly in the box joining process and a second of that flap with another diagonal score is folded in reverse for glue application. As the main panels are folded in the final gluing process the reverse folded glued section adheres to the outside surface of the previously mentioned major bottom flap. As the carton is brought into square during the erection process, the flaps self-form into a solid, full-overlapping bottom.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2001Date of Patent: March 11, 2003Assignee: Stone Container CorporationInventor: Karl M. Patent number: 6375066Abstract: An improvement is provided for a pizza-style paperboard container. The improvement includes first and second separation lines extending through first and second lateral panels, respectively. An additional fold line is provided in the first lateral panel at a location rearward of the first separation line, the material therebetween defining a closure flap. The first lateral panel includes opposed side panels. These side panels include a pre-formed hinge. The second lateral panel also includes opposed side panels. As assembled, the side panels of the first lateral panel are exterior to the side panels of the second lateral panel. After the carton is first assembled in a conventional manner, it may be reduced in size by breaking the carton in two along the separation lines. The closure flap is then pushed inward while the hinges of the outer side panels capture the inner side panels.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2001Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: Weyerhaeuser CompanyInventor: Karl M. Patent number: 5022582Abstract: A blank for forming a paperboard box has portions for forming side walls and end walls of a container and major and minor flaps which interlock to form a bottom to the container. The flaps are connected to the side and end walls along hinge lines. The major flaps include slits or slots which receive tabs on the minor flaps to maintain the bottom closed. The slit or slot of the major flap extends from the center thereof to the hinge line separating the major flap from the side wall. The hinge line between the major flat and the side wall includes pair of spaced parallel fold lines which diagonally extend from the hinge line and intersect the slit or slot. These spaced diagonal fold lines which are offset in alignment, cause the slit or slot to open when the major closure flat is folded over, thereby facilitating insertion of the tab into the slot or slit.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1990Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Assignee: Jefferson Smurfit CorporationInventor: Karl M.
