    Abstract: In an exhaust system for an internal combustion engine having a main exhaust conduit with a catalytic converter arranged remote from the engine and a bypass exhaust conduit which includes a start-up catalytic converter arranged close to the engine and joins the main exhaust gas conduit ahead of said remote catalytic converter, an ejector structure is arranged in the main exhaust gas conduit within a housing defining a suction chamber in communication with the bypass exhaust conduit for drawing gas through the bypass exhaust conduit into said main exhaust gas conduit whenever exhaust gas flows from the engine through the main exhaust gas conduit and a main exhaust conduit valve is arranged between the ejector structure and the junction of the main and the bypass exhaust conduits which is closed during start-up operation of the engine to thereby force the exhaust gas to flow through the suction chamber and the bypass exhaust gas conduit via the start-up catalytic converter.

    Abstract: An adjustable valve gear is provided for two lift-type intake valves per cylinder in an internal combustion engine which are actuated by the cams of a camshaft via rocker arms with variable support and a rocker cam. In order to make possible different lift curves for the two lift-type intake valves, each lift type intake valve is assigned a separate rocker cam. At least one of the curve joints assigned to a lift-type intake valve and establishing the connections between a cam and a rocker arm, between the rocker arm and its support and between a rocker cam and the lift-type intake valve are configured with a different shape or a rotated installation position relative to a curve joint assigned to the other lift-type intake valve.

    Abstract: A casing of a trunk piston internal combustion engine has a cylinder hed, cylinder head cover, cylinder block and oil sump regions and bearing devices for the crankshaft and camshaft. The casing is manufactured from parts which are as simple to manufacture as possible and can be connected together with little effort. For this purpose, the cylinder block, together with a part of the cylinder head closing the respective individual cylinder spaces at the combustion space end, is configured as a common engine block casting with hollow spaces manufactured without the use of lost cores and open in the direction of the cylinder axis at one of the two ends of at least. The hollow spaces are closed by parts welded onto both ends to create a closed continuous water cooling jacket.

The valve axis of one valve of a valve group, relative to valve axis of the other valves of the group, is arranged at a different angle from a center longitudinal plane running through a row of cylindrical bores of the internal combustion engine and is at a different distance from the center longitudinal plane. A camshaft controlling the inlet valves and a second camshaft controlling the exhaust valves or valves are arranged in the cylinder head. Rocker arms for actuating the corresponding cams of the camshafts are rotatably mounted on spindles.

    Abstract: A valve clearance compensator for an internal combustion engine. The compensator includes a sliding member provided with a wedge-shaped surface. The sliding members are arranged so as to be axially displaceable between each control cam of a camshaft and an associated valve. The sliding member is acted upon in one direction constantly by a compression spring but acted upon in the other direction intermittently by an adjusting member. The adjusting member is connected with the camshaft and is adapted to displace the sliding member against the force of the compression spring when the associated valve is in a closed position and over a partial range of a closed period of the valve.

    Abstract: A mechanical valve clearance compensator for internal combustion engines with cup tappet operation. A wedge provided with a wedge-shaped surface is supported in the cup tappet to be displaceable at right angles to a travel direction of the cup tappet. The wedge is under a constant action of a compression spring which acts in a direction toward clearance compensation and is intermittently acted upon in an opposite direction by an operating cam fixedly connected with the cam shaft. The operating cam is fashioned as a radial cam and acts upon a pin longitudinally displaceably guided in the cup tappet. The pin, in turn, is supported on a sliding surface of a wedge, with the sliding surface having a greater inclination than an inclination of the wedge-shaped surface.

    Abstract: An internal combustion engine provided with a mass balance unit of the second order. The mass balance unit includes two balancing shafts with each of the balancing shafts being provided with balancing weights. The balancing shafts are arranged on respective sides of the crankshaft of the engine and extend in parallel thereto. The balancing shafts are driven with a chain by a sprocket wheel seated on the crankshaft with one of the shafts being directly driven for rotation in the direction of rotation of the crankshaft and the other rotating, through the interposition of a pair of gear wheels, in a direction in opposition to the direction of rotation of the crankshaft. The directly driven balancing shaft with sprocket wheel is mounted on an inside of the lid covering an opening of the crankcase of the engine. The other balancing shaft is supported on a bearing cover for the crankshaft and the driving is effected from a sprocket wheel attached to a crank web of the crankshaft.
