  • Patent number: 11976631
Abstract: Methods of measuring a stall condition of a rotor of a wind turbine are disclosed. In one aspect a stall parameter is obtained on the basis of the power parameter and a thrust parameter; and the stall parameter compared with a threshold to determine a stall condition of the rotor.

  • Patent number: 11815067
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling a wind turbine during start up, from a non-producing operation mode to a power producing operation mode when limit cycles occur during start-up. Limit cycles are detected when a number of cut-in transitions or a number of cut-out transitions are detected. A cut-in transition is when the wind turbine fails starting up despite having the wind speed or rotor speed normally required to enter a power producing operation mode. A cut-out transition is occurring when the wind turbine is falling out of power producing operation mode after having entered the power producing operation mode.

  • Publication number: 20230265829
Abstract: A method of controlling a wind turbine blade of a wind turbine comprising: providing data comprising a plurality of pitch angles of the wind turbine blade and corresponding expected power coefficients for the wind turbine, each pitch angle corresponding to a maximum expected power coefficient for a degradation state of the wind turbine blade; obtaining a current power coefficient of the wind turbine; determining a desired pitch angle for the wind turbine blade, the desired pitch angle being equal to a pitch angle from the dataset corresponding to an expected power coefficient equal to the current power coefficient; and changing a pitch angle of the wind turbine blade to the desired pitch angle.

  • Patent number: 11572865
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of controlling a wind turbine comprising a tower supporting a rotor comprising a plurality of pitch-adjustable rotor blades. The method includes obtaining a movement signal indicative of a lateral movement of the tower; determining a pitch modulation signal, based on the movement signal, for actuating a rotor blade to produce a desired horizontal force component to counteract the lateral movement of the tower; determining a radial force component acting on a rotor blade; determining a phase offset parameter for the rotor blade based on the radial force component; and, transforming the pitch modulation signal into a pitch reference offset signal for the rotor blade based on the phase offset parameter.

  • Publication number: 20220228556
Abstract: The invention provides a method of shutting down a wind turbine, the wind turbine comprising a rotor with a plurality of blades; and a generator system coupled to the rotor. The method comprises: operating the generator system to generate electrical power and apply a load torque to the rotor; controlling the electrical power generated with a power reference signal; determining that a shutdown of the wind turbine is required; in response to the determination that a shutdown of the wind turbine is required, changing the power reference signal so as to increase the electrical power generated thereby slowing the rotor; determining that a speed of the rotor has reduced below a threshold; and in response to the determination that the speed of the rotor has decreased below the threshold, changing a pitch of the blades to further slow the rotor.

  • Patent number: 11353624
Abstract: Calculating a wind speed associated with a return period at a proposed wind turbine site. The method comprises selecting a first set of storms from wind speed measurements measured at the proposed site, and selecting a second set of storms from modelled wind speeds, the modelled wind speeds being estimates of wind speeds at the proposed wind turbine site during the measurement period from a mesoscale data set. A comparison is made of characteristic wind speeds of the first and second sets of storms to determine a correction factor. A third set of storms is selected from an extended set of modelled wind speeds from an extended mesoscale data set, and the correction factor is applied to characteristic wind speeds of the third set of storms to provide corrected wind speeds. A wind speed associated with the return period is calculated from the corrected characteristic wind speeds.
