Patent number: 11966805Abstract: A point-of-sale system is a dual-screen stand assembly that includes a merchant terminal and a consumer terminal. The merchant terminal and the consumer terminal can be mated together in a fixed position to form a single unitary stand, or can be separated from each other in a separated position with each terminal serving as its own separate stand. The merchant terminal supports a merchant computing device and is oriented in a merchant-facing direction. The consumer terminal is detachably mated to the merchant terminal and supports a consumer computing device that is oriented in a consumer-facing direction. The point-of-sale system also includes a card reader as part of the customer terminal to perform a payment. The card reader is configured to accepting swipe cards, chip cards or contactless (EMV or NFC) payments.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2023Date of Patent: April 23, 2024Assignee: Block, Inc.Inventors: Yenliang Chen, Isreal Blagdan, Michael C. Patent number: 11599863Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a financial account associated with a payment object based on fund availability are disclosed. A payment object, such as a proxy card associated with multiple financial accounts, is used by a consumer to make a purchase. In one example, the consumer selects a debit card associated with the proxy card to use for the purchase. A computer system determines that the debit card account has insufficient funds available for the purchase, and determines that an alternate account associated with the proxy card has sufficient funds. The computer system notifies the consumer, via a mobile device of the consumer, that the debit account has insufficient funds, and provides the consumer with the option of using the alternate account. The consumer indicates a desire to use the alternate account, and the computer system processes the payment based on the alternate account.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2020Date of Patent: March 7, 2023Assignee: Block, Inc.Inventors: James Paul Thome, Kartik Lamba, Imran Sana Khan

Publication number: 20230020285Abstract: Techniques for using a stored balance associated with a payment instrument are described. Transaction data associated with a transaction is received, wherein a payment instrument linked to a stored balance of a user is provided for payment of the transaction. In one example, a computer system determines that the stored balance is insufficient to satisfy the total amount of the purchase. The computer system further determines, based on a policy and without user input, to access funds from a bank account linked to the stored balance. The funds from the bank account are deposited to the stored balance, and the payment is processed for the total amount using the updated stored balance.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 23, 2022Publication date: January 19, 2023Inventors: James Paul Thome, Kartik Lamba, Imran Sana Khan

Patent number: 11238426Abstract: A method and apparatus for associating an account with a proxy card are disclosed. The proxy card can be associated with account data from multiple other cards, such as account data from a driver's license and from various payment cards, such as a credit card, a debit card, and a pre-paid gift card. In some embodiments, a card-holder can associate an additional card with the proxy card using a mobile device. The mobile device associates the additional card with the proxy card by causing updating of stored association information, that represents an association between the card and the account data of the multiple cards, with the account information.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2017Date of Patent: February 1, 2022Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Kartik Lamba, Rodion Steshenko, Jesse Dorogusker
