  • Patent number: 4505539
Abstract: An optical device, such as the switch, for controlling the passage of a light beam into and out of an end face of a waveguide such as a glass fiber includes utilizing either a layer or drop of liquid material to control the light passage. The liquid material can be a layer, which has changeable optical properties, which can occur by applying a magnetic field, heat or electrical field or the material can be a layer of electrolyte material which will precipitate a reflective layer or electrochromic layer in response to an application of an electrical field. In another embodiment, the liquid material may be moved into and out of engagement with the end face to change the reflective nature of the end face and to cause decoupling of light from the end face or block the transmission of light.

  • Patent number: 4447292
Abstract: A method for manufacturing unsupported metal lattice structures, such as nickel lattices for use as micro-flow sensors in gas analysis devices, employs the steps of two-sided vacuum metallization on a substrate, several photoresist steps, an electroplating step, and an etching step. A number of units can be produced by this method on a single substrate.

  • Patent number: 4325002
Abstract: A luminescent screen for flat image display devices, having improved light efficiency comprises a glass screen (1) provided on its inner surface with a pattern of recesses (2) corresponding to a desired luminescent dot pattern with luminescent dot surfaces (5) positioned not only along the bottom of such recesses but also along the upwardly extending recess walls and a contrasting border layer (3) is positioned on the land areas between each recess. In producing such screens, the contrasting border layer is utilized as an etch mask for the recesses and as an application mask for the luminescent material.

  • Patent number: 4322656
Abstract: A spacer mount for a gas-discharge display device in which glass elements are arranged between a control hole plate and a fluorescent screen carrying image points of luminous material has a plurality of glass plates stacked one atop another between the control hole plate and the fluorescent screen. The glass layers include holes aligned with the holes of the control hole plate and the image points, and at least one metal layer is interposed between at least two of the glass plates and has holes aligned with the holes of the control hole plate.

  • Patent number: 4293376
Abstract: A perforated glass plate for use in gas discharge display devices is produced by providing an etch-resistant coating in a select pattern on surfaces of a glass plate so that areas to be perforated are coating-free, subjecting the so-coated glass plate to a gaseous hydrofluoric acid, obtained from concentrated hydrofluoric acid, for a period of time sufficient to etch fine sized perforations, for example holes, through the plate and rinsing the etched plates.

  • Patent number: 4058432
Abstract: A process for producing a thin metal structure with a self-supporting frame, such as a grid, characterized by forming a galvanic resistant coating on a first surface of a carrier member with the coating exposing portions of the first surface adjacent the end of the carrier member and portions of the first surface in the configuration of the metal structure to be formed, depositing a layer of metal on the exposed portion of the first surface, removing the galvanic resistant coating, applying an etch resistant coating on the edges of thecarrier member and at least a portion of a second surface adjacent the edges of the carrier member and then selectively etching the carrier member to remove the carrier member except for that portion protected by the etch resistant coating to form the thin metal structure mounted on a self-supporting frame. The carrier member may either be a single member or a multi-layer member which has a metal coating forming the first surface.
