  • Patent number: 8190240
Abstract: A device and method for gas measurements in body cavities are provided. These may be any body cavity containing a free gas, where there is an interest in detecting and/or measuring the concentration of said free gas by non-invasive or minimally invasive method. According to an exemplary embodiment measurement of free oxygen in cranium cavities is performed by scattering media absorption spectroscopy, and in particular variations of such oxygen. This is particularly useful for diagnostic purposes based on the measurements, for instance for detecting sinusitis or the like.

  • Publication number: 20100185099
Abstract: A system and method for therapy and diagnosis of a human or animal. At least one coupling element for coupling of radiation couples radiation from at least a first radiation source to a tumor site and/or from said second radiation source to said site and/or from said site to a detector. The coupling elements are combinations of at least one translatory distributor, at least one rotary distributor, and at least one operation mode selector means for directing either said therapeutic radiation or said diagnostic radiation to said site through said at least one first radiation conductor. The system may be used for interactive interstitial photodynamic tumor therapy. The system and method according to the invention combines the advantages of purely mechanical and purely non-mechanical solutions in a new and synergetic way.

  • Publication number: 20090099459
Abstract: A device and method for determining the effect of therapy in a tumour tissue of a human or a mammal under interstitial photodynamic or photothermal therapy by analyzing a liquid flow in a tissue of a human or a mammal. A first fibre is interstitially inserted in a first position of said tissue and connected to a light source, and a second fibre is interstitially inserted in a second position of said tissue for receiving light emitted from the first fibre. A detector is arranged for receiving the light from said second fibre for producing an output signal. An analysator receives the output signal from the detector and determines if there is a frequency component in the frequency area below about 1 MHz in the output signal, which is indicative of blood cell movement in the tissue. If the frequency component is below a threshold value, it is determined that there is no blood flow. In photothermal therapy, no blood flow is interpreted as the fact that the blood has coagulated and the therapy may be finalized.

  • Patent number: 7037325
Abstract: A distributor for a system for interactive interstitial photodynamic and photothermal tumor therapy and tumor diagnosis, comprises a plurality of primary radiation conductors arranged for conducting radiation to and from the tumor site, a plurality of secondary radiation conductors, two flat discs abutting against each other, wherein a first of said discs is fixed and the second of said discs is turnable relatively to the other disc, and each disc has holes arranged on a circular line. The proximal ends of the primary radiation conductors are fixed in the holes of the fixed disc and distal ends of the secondary radiation conductors are fixed in the holes of the turnable disc, whereby the primary and the secondary radiation conductors by rotation of the turnable disc are connectable to each other in different constellations.

  • Publication number: 20040199223
Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and a method for emitting plane laser light to biological tissue, wherein in high power lasers are modulated in order to provide an output beam consisting of high temporal and/or spatial coherence and at the same time is capable of delivering an output beam having a high power when being delivered through fibres having a core diameter of less than 400 &mgr;m. The method and system may in particular be used for photodynamic treatment (PDT) Optical fibers and/or thermal treatment. In a preferred embodiment the system and method also includes a monitoring system for the effect actually delivered to the biological tissue. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method of treatment using the system, as well as a method for diagnosing using the system.

  • Patent number: 5115137
Abstract: A sample (1) is irradiated by a pulse from a laser (2), creating fluorescence radiation, which is brought, in imaging relation or otherwise, to a detector (6) sensing from the same sample (1) in a plurality of spectral intervals (6A-6D), for obtaining intensity values. The radiation may be sensed in imaging relation, creating a multiplicity of said pluralities. The spectral intervals may be wavelength defined by passband filters (5A-5D) or time interval defined time spectral intervals controlled by a computer (7), which makes a numerical evaluation comprising a division. The tissue character may then be evaluated from the evaluation.
