Patent number: 9891963Abstract: A system and method for notifying users in a manner that is appropriate for the event and the environment for the user. The method of the present invention relates to determining the desired properties of an event and assigning varying notification characteristics to that event. Profiles are created of the various events, wherein each profile relates to a different mode or situational environment, such as a meeting environment, an office or normal environment, a louder outside-type environment, etc. The invention further relates to placing the small computer device in a particular mode, either automatically or manually. Once in a particular mode the device provides notifications according to that mode.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2014Date of Patent: February 13, 2018Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Kathryn L. Patent number: 9411434Abstract: Switching between an arm's length user interface and a distance user interface is provided. A first user interface optimized to operate a computer from an arm's-length distance is presented on a display. A command is received. It is determined whether the command is from a wired device or a wirelessly-connected device. When the command is from a wired device, then the first user interface continues to be presented. When the command is from a wirelessly-connected device, then the display is toggled from the first user interface to the distance user interface. The distance user interface is optimized for operating the computer from a television-viewing distance. The television-viewing distance measured in feet is approximately half of a diagonal measure of the image displayed on the display device measured in inches.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2013Date of Patent: August 9, 2016Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Kathryn L. Patent number: 7533352Abstract: A user interface for a hand-held device is provided that allows users to activate the full “card” for an entry using one gesture on a button while also giving the user the ability to reach a menu of context dependent commands using a second gesture on a button. In particular, certain button inputs are recognized as context menu gestures. When these gestures are made, a context menu appears. The user is then able to select a command in the context menu that is to be performed. A user is also allowed to open context menus while only using one hand to operate and hold the device.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2003Date of Patent: May 12, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chee H. Patent number: 7411582Abstract: A method and system for receiving user input data into a computer system having a graphical windowing environment. A touch-sensitive display screen for displaying images and detecting user activity is provided. A management component connects to the graphical windowing environment to create an input panel window for display on the screen. An input method which may be a COM object is selected from multiple input methods available, and installed such that the input method can call functions of the management component. Each input method includes a corresponding input panel, such as a keyboard, which it draws in the input panel window. When the user taps the screen at the input panel, the input method calls a function of the management component to pass corresponding input information appropriate information such as a keystroke or character to the management component.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2004Date of Patent: August 12, 2008Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Michael G. Patent number: 7287172Abstract: A system and method for automatically locking user interface input elements to avoid negative impact of inadvertently pressing a user input element. The method receives an internally generated locking signal; sets a locked flag to indicate the user input elements are locked. Input signals occurring while the input elements are locked are ignored. In accordance with other aspects, the method further relates to determining whether input signals relate to an unlock signal. The internally generated locking signal is generated following a predetermined time interval that is managed by an internal timer and may be related to an automatic shutoff/sleep mode time interval. Alternatively, a calendar-type application program may initiate the internally generated locking signal in response to a predetermined event.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2005Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Kathryn L. Patent number: 6856330Abstract: The invention provides for a method and system for displaying a separate default view for a selected application on a small computing device when a new user session for the selected application is started. Each interaction with each application and a switch are monitored and time stamped. Separate current user sessions are created for each application running on a small computing device. A current user session for a selected application is determined to be over when a maximum interval of inactivity associated with the selected application is less than the amount of time since a last interaction occurred with the selected application. When a current user session is over for a selected application, a new user session for the application is started and a default view for the application is displayed.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2000Date of Patent: February 15, 2005Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chee H. Patent number: 6833827Abstract: A method and system for automatically determining when an application should switch from a writing mode to a text entry mode, and vice-versa. When a soft input panel (SIP) or input method (IM) is selected, the application is notified and enters a text entry mode. Inputting via the IM while in this mode causes a character to be sent to the application, while pen events in the application window enable text editing and the selection of text and ink data in the application widow. When the SIP is deselected, the application is notified and enters a pen (writing) mode, whereby the pen events are interpreted as digital ink strokes instead of characters. Sub-modes of the pen mode are also available, via which the pen events are used to manipulate existing ink in the application window. Visual feedback may be provided to remind the user of the current mode and/or sub-mode.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2003Date of Patent: December 21, 2004Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Charlton E. Lui, Kathryn L. Parker, Dan W. Altman

Patent number: 6727917Abstract: The hand-held computing device user interface (UI) of the present invention displays information for an active application program in a middle portion of the screen, and displays a shell program controlled navigation bar at a top portion of the screen. The navigation bar includes a navigation icon which when tapped by the stylus aids the user in navigating to other application programs. The navigation bar also includes a title for the active application program, thus saving vertical real estate on the screen. The UI of the present invention also displays an application menu bar at a bottom portion of the screen so that the user of the hand-held device can manipulate data from the active application by tapping menu items with a stylus without blocking view of the middle portion of the display.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2000Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chee H. Publication number: 20030234809Abstract: A method and system for operating a computer remotely whereby a hand-held device is used to input commands to control the computer. A logical connection is established within a network computing environment between the hand-held device and the computer. Client and server applications are started that facilitate two-way communication between the computer and the hand-held device. Media devices and entertainment devices connected to the computer can also be controlled by the hand-held device.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 19, 2002Publication date: December 25, 2003Inventors: Kathryn L. Publication number: 20030231202Abstract: A method and system for execution in a graphical user interface environment are provided. The method and system are used to facilitate presentation of image files in a themed slide show on the graphical user interface. A set of digital image files for possible inclusion in the themed slide show are presented on the graphical user interface. Thereafter, monitoring takes place to check for receipt of an indication that at least a portion of the set of digital image files are to be included in the themed slide show. A number of different themes, each having predetermined theme properties, is presented on the graphical user interface for selection. The themes may include selected corresponding audio files. The selected theme is applied to the set of selected digital image files. Applying the selected theme properties to the set of digital image files then creates the slide show.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 18, 2002Publication date: December 18, 2003Inventors: Kathryn L. Patent number: 6664991Abstract: The present invention provides a user interface for a pen-based device that allows users to activate the full “card” for an entry using a single tap while also giving the user the ability to reach a menu of context dependent commands using a simple gesture. In particular, the present invention recognizes certain stylus and/or button inputs as context menu gestures. When these gestures are made, a context menu appears. The user is then able to select a command in the context menu that is to be performed. The present invention also allows a user to open context menus while only using one hand to operate and hold the device.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2000Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chee H.
