A keyboard is attached to an inner surface of the upper case, and a shield plate is fixed to an inner surface of the keyboard. On the shield plate are mounted a memory device and circuit boards with electronic parts. A supporting unit attached to the inner surface of the upper case and arranged to the side of the keyboard has a storing portion for storing a battery pack.

The tilt leg is slideable between a tilting position for tilting the keyboard forwardly and an untilting position for storing the tilt leg in the base. The base has an external release switch having an internal projection for cooperating with a biased fixing member positioned on an opposite side of the tilt leg, releasing the tilt leg from the tilting position and the untilting position. The tilt leg includes a slot to provide clearance for the release switch projection during sliding movement of the leg. The tilt leg is compact because of the sliding construction.

Abstract: A hinge mechanism is disclosed which couples the flat-panel display of a portable apparatus to the housing of the apparatus. The flat-panel display can be folded upon the housing, and the apparatus looks like an attache case. The hinge mechanism has a torsion bar. The torsion bar is fastened, at one end, to the hinge mechanism. The other end portion of the torsion bar is flat and held by a holder such that the torsion bar is prevented from rotating around its axis, but can move in its axial direction. The axis of the hinge mechanism is defined by hollow cylindrical bosses inserted in circular holes cut in the hinge mechanism. The force which the torsion bar generates when it is twisted comes into equilibrium with the force urging the display to fall down toward the housing when the display reaches a position close to the housing. Hence, the panel display stops at this position.
