Patent number: 8221499Abstract: An infection-blocking dental implant in which a threaded portion which contacts bone is roughened except for up to three threads which may be exposed by bone recession after implantation, which have a smooth surface. Preferably, the implant is of titanium or titanium alloy and the threaded portion is roughened by a two-step acid treatment.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2012Assignee: Biomet 3I, LLCInventors: Richard J. Patent number: 8087935Abstract: An implant delivery system includes a carrier that is attached to an implant. The carrier includes a main body having a lower portion to be attached to the implant and an upper portion. The upper portion includes an internally threaded section having a polygonal internal cross-section. The polygonal cross-section engages a tool that applies torque to install the implant into bone. The threaded section receives a threaded portion of a secondary component to be coupled to the carrier after the implant has been installed. One secondary component is a gingival healing component. Thus, the combination of the carrier and the gingival healing component acts as a healing abutment after the carrier has been used to install the implant.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2008Date of Patent: January 3, 2012Assignee: Biomet 3i, LLCInventors: Keith D. Beaty, Richard J. Lazzara, Daniel J. Tarullo, Thomas S. Heylmun

Patent number: 6899715Abstract: The invention set forth includes a set of tools which compact bone tissue as they develop a bore in the bone tissue and a driving mechanism for providing movement to the tools. The tools have engaging surfaces which displace bone tissue radially outward with respect to a central axis of the tool to create high density bone tissue at the wall defining the bore. The driving mechanism may provide only vibrational movement to assist in inserting the tool. Alternatively, the driving mechanism may provide translational movement in the longitudinal direction with respect to the tool to insert the tool into the bone.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2000Date of Patent: May 31, 2005Assignee: Implant Innovations, Inc.Inventor: Keith D. Patent number: 6343930Abstract: A support post for use with a dental implant comprising a ceramic portion, a screw, and a metal portion. The ceramic portion is adapted to support a prosthesis thereon. The ceramic portion has a supragingival region for protruding beyond the gingiva and a subgingival end for extending into the gingiva. The ceramic portion has a passageway extending therethrough. According to one embodiment, the passageway narrows to form a shoulder that is made entirely of ceramic. The screw is adapted to engage an internally threaded bore in the implant and be insertable through the passageway. The screw comprises a head and a threaded section. The head of the screw seats entirely on the shoulder. The metal portion comprises a lower section and an upper section extending into the passageway. The metal portion abuts the subgingival end of the ceramic portion. The lower section is adapted to receive and engage the corresponding boss of the dental implant. The metal portion has an opening to provide access to the screw.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2000Date of Patent: February 5, 2002Assignee: Implant Innovations, Inc.Inventors: Keith D. Beaty, Gale R.
