  • Patent number: 5799558
Abstract: An arbor is formed with uniformly-spaced splines each of which has a cross-section in the shape of an asymmetric trapezoid. The leading force transmitting face of each of the splines is disposed at an angle lagging by about seven degrees from a truly radially-extending plane of the arbor. The trailing face of each of the splines is disposed other than in a generally radially-extending plane of the arbor. A circular saw blade mounted on the arbor has a central opening or eye formed with complementarily shaped recesses such that the arbor splines fit within the recesses in the eye for transmission of torque from arbor to saw.

  • Patent number: 5752307
Abstract: A replaceable bit for a circular saw is provided with a cutting portion of hard metal alloy by machining off the original cutting portion, supporting the remaining base metal portion such that a predetermined selected part extends into a chill mold, melting the surface of the selected part using a plasma arc welding torch, feeding a rod of the hard alloy into the plasma jet of the torch such that melted material from the rod drips into the mold cavity to fill it, the melted alloy mixing with the melted surface of the selected part of the remaining base metal portion in a transition zone, allowing the melted mass of hard alloy to cool and harden into a dome shape in the mold cavity, removing the bit from the mold cavity, and grinding the flank, face and back regions of the new cutting portion to selected final dimensions. Apparatus suitable for performing the process is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5728434
Abstract: A method of making coater and doctor blades for use on paper-making machinery is disclosed. A bond coating and then a wear-resistant coating are applied to one edge of an endless steel carrier strip. The strip is passed together with a masking strip continuously in only one direction through a coating zone for spraying by a plasma gun. The masking strip masks a transverse portion of the carrier strip so as to leave one edge of the latter exposed to the spray. Spraying continues for the number of passes necessary to apply desired thicknesses of the coatings to the carrier strip.

  • Patent number: 5439039
Abstract: A log-slabbing chipper with multiple knife structures distributed about the periphery of a power-driven rotor head. Each knife structure includes a holder and a pair of assemblies mounting double-edge replaceable knives. Each knife is mounted between a clamp and a fixed counterknife. Each knife has a serrated back-bearing surface and each clamp has a correspondingly serrated clamping surface. Adjusting screws exert pressure on the clamps to slide the clamps and the knives with respect to the stationary counterknives to achieve desired precise edge positions.

  • Patent number: 5271440
Abstract: A knife assembly for a disc type wood chipper includes a reversible disposable knife having a serrated back bearing surface positioned between a serrated knife clamp and a flat counterknife. The knife can be reground and advanced along the serrated clamping surface of the clamp so as to maintain a desired edge position with respect to the surface of the chipper disc and the anvil surface.
