The system includes a sampling head with an actuator and a needle. The needle has retracted and extended positions relative to the actuator. A vacuum ring and switch are included at the end of the actuator. The switch determines when the sampling head is in physical contact with a top surface of the sealed package. After contact has been made, the vacuum ring draws a vacuum to secure the sampling head in place upon the package. The needle can then be extended to puncture the package and withdraw a sample of air for testing.
