  • Publication number: 20080006045
Abstract: An auxiliary system provide auxiliary power and air conditioning for a vehicle while a main engine of the vehicle is not operating. An auxiliary alternator is mounted to and driven directly by the drive shaft of an auxiliary engine. The auxiliary alternator has permanent magnets and three sets of windings, including two sets of windings for generating AC voltage via inverters, and a second set of windings for generating DC voltage for directly recharging a battery of the vehicle via a regulator. An air conditioner compressor also is driven by the auxiliary engine for compressing refrigerant. A condenser is in fluid communication with the compressor for condensing the refrigerant, an evaporator is in fluid communication with the refrigerant condensed by the condenser, and an electric blower moves air through the evaporator into the interior of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7259469
Abstract: A truck includes an auxiliary power unit having components specifically selected such that they form a stand-alone unit that can fit within an auxiliary compartment of a vehicle and deliver heating, cooling, and additional electric power to the vehicle. Included is an auxiliary engine, an auxiliary alternator, and an auxiliary condenser to provide coolant for a personnel compartment mounted evaporator. An auxiliary voltage regulator provides a ramp-up feature to minimize excessive start-up loads, limits maximum available current from the auxiliary alternator when the auxiliary compressor is engaged, and selectively disables power to electrical components in the event of low vehicle battery voltage. The auxiliary engine includes a radiator system to provide heated fluid for a personnel compartment mounted heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 7150159
Abstract: A hybrid auxiliary power system for a vehicle provides auxiliary electrical power, cooling, and heating while the main engine of the vehicle is turned off. An auxiliary engine directly drives an air-conditioner compressor. A condenser condenses the refrigerant and supplies it to an evaporator. A blower moves air through the evaporator and into the vehicle. The engine also drives an AC generator, which supplies air to a battery charger. The battery charger supplies DC voltage to charge the battery of the vehicle as well as power to the blower of the auxiliary air-conditioner.

  • Patent number: 6932148
Abstract: A heating and air-conditioning system has an auxiliary engine for heating and cooling of a vehicle while the primary engine of the vehicle is not operating. The vehicle has a sleeper compartment with a sleeper compartment air conditioning unit powered by the main engine. An auxiliary air conditioning system located exterior of the sleeper compartment is powered by the auxiliary engine. An auxiliary supply duct extends into the sleeper compartment and joins the duct of the sleeper compartment air conditioning unit. A valve operated by air pressure blocks air flow from the sleeper compartment air conditioning unit into the auxiliary duct while in the main position. In the auxiliary position, the valve blocks air flow from the auxiliary duct into the sleeper compartment air conditioning unit.

  • Publication number: 20050072553
Abstract: A heating and air-conditioning system allows heating and cooling of a vehicle while the primary engine of the vehicle not operating. The auxiliary engine has an electrical generating device for generating electricity. A radiator is connected to the auxiliary engine for receiving engine coolant. A heater element is in communication with the radiator for receiving part of the coolant. A fan powered by the electrical generating device discharges air through the heater element and into the vehicle. The auxiliary engine also powers an air-conditioning unit for supplying cool air. An electrical motor drives a pump for pumping an engine lubricant to and from the auxiliary engine. An oil filter treats the lubricant.
