  • Publication number: 20230037780
Abstract: A computing device having a tightly attached or closely attached hardware accelerator directly coupled with one or more processors for efficient uses of the hardware accelerator for executing specific functions are described. According to an embodiment, the hardware accelerator is instantiated inside the main processor unit and interfaces to a load-store unit (LS) using virtual addresses. The hardware accelerator instantiated inside the main processing unit (e.g., core) is referred to as a tightly attached hardware accelerator. In an alternative embodiment, the hardware accelerator is instantiated inside a cluster of processor cores. The hardware accelerator that is instantiated inside the cluster of processor cores but not inside a specific processor core is referred to as a closely attached hardware accelerator.

  • Patent number: 9110802
Abstract: A method of implementing a mask load or mask store instruction by a processor is provided. The method may include receiving the mask load or mask store instruction, a location of a memory operand and a location of corresponding mask bits associated with the memory operand, breaking the received memory operand into a plurality of sub-operands and executing the mask load or mask store instruction on each of the plurality of sub-operands using a fastpath operation or using microcode, wherein the respective mask load or mask store instruction loads or stores each of the plurality of sub-operands based upon the corresponding mask bits.

  • Patent number: 8407271
Abstract: An apparatus and method for computing a rounded floating point number. A floating point unit (FPU) receives an instruction to round a floating point number to a nearest integral value and retrieves a binary source operand having an exponent of a fixed first number of bits and a mantissa of a fixed second number of bits. If the unbiased exponent value is greater than or equal to zero and less than the fixed second number, the FPU generates a mask having N consecutive ‘1’ bits beginning with the least significant bit and whose remaining bits have a value of ‘0’, where N is equal to the fixed second number minus the unbiased exponent value. The FPU computes a bitwise OR of the source operand with the mask, increments the result if the instruction is to round up, and computes a bitwise AND of the result with the inverse of the mask.

  • Publication number: 20120191952
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are provided for increased efficiency and enhanced power saving in a processor via scalar code optimization. The method comprises determining that an instruction comprises a scalar instruction and then processing the instruction using only a lower portion of an XMM register. The apparatus comprises an operational unit capable of determining whether an instruction comprises a scalar instruction and execution units responsive that determining for processing the scalar instruction using only a lower portion of an XMM register of the processor. By not processing the upper portion of the XMM register efficiency is increased and power saving is enhanced.
