    Abstract: A rubber composition useful as a tire side wall or tire tread is formed from an unsaturated olefin copolymer (A) or (A′) and diene rubber (B). Copolymers (A) and (A′) are each obtained from (i) ethylene, (ii) aromatic vinyl compound, (iii) non-conjugated polyene, and, optionally (iv) alpha-olefin having at least 3 carbon atoms. When used in forming a tire side wall, copolymer (A) has a molar ratio of (i)/(iv) from 100/0 to 40/60; molar ratio of [((i)+(iv))/(ii)] from 98/2 to 60/40; an intrinsic viscosity, measured in decalin, at 135° C., from 1.0 to 6.0 dl/g; and iodine value from 10 to 50. For use in tire tread, copolymer (A′), has a molar ratio (i)/(iv) from 100/0 to 40/60; molar ratio [((i)+(iv)):(ii)] from 99/1 to 85/15. The weight ratio (A′)/(B) is from 1/99 to 50/50. The compositions for tire side wall are characterized by excellent strength properties and bending fatigue resistance and low fuel consumption.

    Abstract: A hot melt adhesive composition exhibiting excellent adhesive strength and which is useful as an adhesive for styrene resins contains (B) tackifier and (C) ethylene/C3-C20 &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer and, in some embodiments also (A) base polymer, such as polyolefin, polar group-containing polymer and aromatic vinyl compound/conjugated diene copolymer. A low molecular weight polyolefin may also be included in all embodiments. The randon copolymer (C) may be prepared by polymerizing the &agr;-olefin and aromatic vinyl compound in the presence of a metallocene containing catalyst. In addition to excellent adhesive strength the hot melt adhesives have improved workability.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an unsaturated elastomer composition comprising (A) an unsaturated olefin copolymer of at least one &agr;-olefin of 2 to 20 carbon atoms, a conjugated diene monomer represented by the following formula (I), and optionally, an aromatic vinyl compound, and (B) at least one rubber selected from a diene rubber and an ethylene/&agr;-olefin/nonconjugated polyene copolymer rubber, a weight ratio of said component (A) to said component (B) ((A)/(B)) being in the range of 1/99 to 99/1; wherein R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an aryl group, and at least one of R1 and R2 is a hydrogen atom. From the composition, a vulcanized product excellent in vibration damping properties, vibration insulation properties and strength properties as well as in heat resistance, weathering resistant, ozone resistance and dynamic fatigue resistance can be obtained.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed towards a lubricating oil comprising a random copolymer of an &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound, wherein the copolymer has a viscosity falling within a specific range and comprises ethylene, an aromatic vinyl compound, and optionally an &agr;-olefin. The lubricating oil possesses excellent viscosity properties, thermal stability, oxidation stability, abrasion resistance, and compatibility with lubricating oil additives. The random copolymer having a different viscosity range is useful as a viscosity index improver and a compatibilizing agent for a lubricating oil. The invention also provides a lubricating oil composition comprising a base oil and the viscosity index improver or the compatibilizing agent. The invention further provides a fuel oil composition comprising a fuel oil fluidity improver based on the above random copolymer having a different viscosity range and a middle fraction fuel oil having a boiling point of 150 to 400° C.

This &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer comprises 99.9 to 58 mol % of structural units derived from ethylene, 0 to 30 mol % of structural units derived from an &agr;-olefin having 3 to 20 carbon atoms (provided that the total of the structural units derived from ethylene and the structural units derived from an &agr;-olefin having 3 to 20 carbon atoms ranges from 99.9 to 88 mol %), and 0.1 to 12 mol % of structural units derived from an aromatic vinyl compound. The &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer has an intrinsic viscosity [&eegr;], as measured in decalin at 135° C., of 0.1 to 10 dl/g and has a melting point, as measured by a differential scanning calorimeter, of 60 to 125° C.     Abstract: Disclosed is an olefin thermoplastic elastomer composition obtained by dynamically heat treating, in the presence of an organic peroxide, a blend comprising 10 to 60 parts by weight of a crystalline polyolefin resin (A) and 40 to 90 parts by weight of an unsaturated olefin copolymer (B) of at least one .alpha.-olefin of 2 to 20 carbon atoms, a conjugated diene monomer represented by the following formula (I), and optionally, an aromatic vinyl compound, the total amount of said components (A) and (B) being 100 parts by weight; ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an aryl group, and at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom. The composition has excellent moldability and can provide a molded product having excellent elastomeric properties, tensile strength properties and appearance.

    Abstract: An adhesive resin composition contains at least a partially or wholly graft-modified .alpha.-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer having a graft quantity of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or its derivative ranging from 0.01 to 30% by weight. A laminate comprises (I) a polyester resin layer or a polycarbonate layer, (II) an adhesive layer formed from the above-mentioned adhesive resin composition and (III) a saponified olefin/vinyl acetate copolymer layer. The adhesive resin composition is free from lowering of adhesive strength even when contacted with, for example, hot water. The laminate has excellent gas barrier properties and is capable of being subjected to retorting treatment.
