The structured request together with any additional information related to the request, form a machine-readable collection of information. At the supervisory computer, the request is reviewed by a receiving staff physician who designates a specialist and retrieves supporting documentation related to the consultation request from databases of medical information. The supervisory computer then transmits the request for consultation and at least an identification of the selected supporting documentation to the selected specialist for review, and thereafter receives a comment from the selected specialist.
