  • Patent number: 4904531
Abstract: Free-flowing plural extrudates of a polar ethylene interpolymer, and method of preparing the same. The extrudates are essentially coated with about 0.001-2 percent, by weight of the composition, fumed silica, preferably about 0.025-0.05 weight percent. The fumed silica has an average primary particle size of about 5-25 millimicrons, a surface area of about 200-250 m.sup.2 /g, and is substantially amorphous and non-porous. The interpolymer has interpolymerized therein polar monomer, such as acrylic acid, n-butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, or the like, in an amount so that the untreated extrudates have high block. The extrudates are treated by admixture with the silica or by contact with an aqueous dispersion of about 0.01-10 wt. % silica. When the interpolymer contains .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, the extrudates are optionally surface neutralized with a base.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 23, 1988
Date of Patent: February 27, 1990
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Laura A. Kelly, Kenneth L. Bryce
  • Patent number: 4847164
Abstract: Melt-reacted blends of ethylene/carboxylic acid copolymers with metal oxides are improved by first incorporating the metal oxide into an ethylene copolymer of LDPE, HDPE, or LLDPE to form a concentrate or masterbatch, then melt-blending a minor amount of the concentrate into the ethylene/carboxylic acid copolymer thereby obtaining a uniform, homogeneous reaction of the metal oxide with the carboxylic acid groups. These melt-reacted blends provide tough molding resins. Especially preferred are melt-reacted blends of EAA with minor amounts of MgO/LLDPE concentrates.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 29, 1988
Date of Patent: July 11, 1989
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Paul L. Neill, Gerald M. Lancaster, Kenneth L. Bryce

  • Patent number: 4420580
Abstract: The detrimental effect of inorganic metal fillers on impact strength of polyolefin resins is substantially reduced by the addition of a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, such as ethylene-acrylic acid, to a melt blend of the polyolefin resin containing the inorganic filler. The addition of the ethylene copolymer provides an effective means to compatibilize or couple the filler into the polyolefin resin.
