  • Patent number: 6837288
Abstract: Rubber blends of brominated isobutylene/para-methylstyrene copolymers of 9.5 to 20 weight percent aromatic monomer content and 0.2 to 1.0 mole percent benzylic bromine content. The blends have good cure characteristics, good adhesion and flex crack resistance, as well as ozone resistance. The blends are useful in tire sidewalls, and other applications.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 2, 2002
Date of Patent: January 4, 2005
    Assignee: ExxonMobil Chemical Patents Inc.
Inventors: Kenneth Odell McElrath, Mun-Fu Tse, Andrew Louis Tisler
  • Patent number: 6624235
Abstract: Transparent and colorable elastomeric compositions are provided. The transparent elastomeric compositions can be covulcanized with rubbers such as polybutadiene, polyisoprene, styrene-butadiene rubber, styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber, isoprene-butadiene rubber, ethylene-propylene diene rubber or natural rubber. The colorable rubber compositions have sufficient properties to function as a reinforcing member in an automobile tire. Preferably, both the transparent and colorable elastomeric compositions include at least one copolymer of a C4 to C7 isoolefin and a para-alkylstyrene, silica and a coupling agent.

  • Patent number: 6197885
Abstract: Vulcanized rubber parts suitable to dampen vibrations generated by mechanical devices are disclosed. The parts are based on a cured composition comprising one or a mixture of a diolefin polymers, e.g., natural rubber, a halogenated copolymer of a C4 to C7 isomonoolefin, e.g., isobutylene, and a para-alkylstyrene, filler and a curing system. The vulcanized parts exhibit improved aging and high temperature resistance and reduced deterioration of dynamic properties after long term exposure to high temperatures.

Inventors: Shinichiro Yamashita, Kenneth Odell McElrath, Jr.
  • Patent number: 6051653
Abstract: The invention provides for curable compositions containing a halogenated copolymer of a C.sub.4 to C.sub.7 isomonoolefin, e.g., isobutylene and a para-alkylstyrene, e.g., para-methylstyrene, and further containing an effective amount of a metal salt, e.g. zinc, of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. methacrylic acid, as a curing agent. The composition also contains an organic peroxide as a co-curative and one or a mixture of saturated polymer blend components which are co-curable with the halogenated copolymer. The curable composition may further comprise EPDM.
