    Abstract: The invention relates to a high-pressure discharge lamp of the ceramic metal halide type of the Philips MasterColor® series having power ranges of about 150 W to about 1000 W. Such lamps are provided with a discharge vessel which encloses a discharge space. The discharge vessel has a ceramic wall and is closed by a ceramic plug. An electrode which is located inside the discharge space is connected to an electric conductor by way of a leadthrough element. The leadthrough element projects through the ceramic plug with a close fit and is connected thereto in a gas-tight manner by way of a sealing ceramic. The leadthrough element has a first part which is formed by a cermet at the area of the gas-tight connection.

    Abstract: A 1000 watt arc discharge arc tube assembly comprises two series connected side-by-side arc discharge tubes whose combined break down voltage in sufficient for a standard 2-5 kv starting pulse to simultaneously start both arc tubes without additional structure. A standard ballast, starter and fixture can be used with the arc tube assembly whose overall length is less than 300 millimeters. The lamps are spaced sufficiently apart to preclude detrimental heat transfer effects on one another and sufficiently close to act as a single source of light in standard fixtures normally employing lamps having a single discharge tube.

    Abstract: A high intensity arc discharge lamp having an elongated outer vitreous envelope sealed by a dome at its upper end and a base assembly at is lower end. An elongated arc discharge tube within the envelope is supported at its lower end by the base assembly and at its upper end by a supporting frame, the lower end of the supporting frame also being supported by the base assembly. To stabilize the upper end of the supporting frame against movement with respect to the outer envelope, a curvilinear flat retaining spring is affixed at one end to the upper end of the supporting frame, the other end of the retaining spring being in free cantilevered compression contact with the dome of the envelope.

    Abstract: A method of assembling the arc tube of a high-pressure sodium lamp is disclosed that comprises using a spring clip to engage the lead wire proximate the end plug on the side opposite the electrode coil assembly. The electrode coil assembly is thereby centered relative to the end plug and the three ends of the clip provide planar support of the end plug/electrode on the end of the arc tube. The clip is formed by bending a refractory metal wire 180.degree. about the midpoint, bending the ends of the legs away from each other while maintaining co-planar geometry, and providing an indentation for engaging the lead wire.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for press sealing a tubular quartz arc tube body section about a ribbon-type metallic seal. The method includes applying different intensities of heat to the quartz arc tube body section to be pressed in such a manner that four portions of the quartz arc tube body section which are located within diametrically opposed quadrant sections are heated to a higher softened-state temperature than those portions of the heated quartz arc tube body which are positioned intermediate the higher-heated quartz arc tube body portions, with the higher-heated quartz arc tube body portions collapsing somewhat due to the surface tension of the softened quartz. Utilizing this method results in an improved press seal.
