  • Patent number: 10110993
Abstract: A high-power omnidirectional electronic speaker array (or “siren”) having a variable number of circular chambers vertically arranged on a rigid mast. Each chamber, or module, contains one or more manifolds that serve as waveguides for the sound energy emanating from audio compression drivers. Each manifold combines the output of two or more compression drivers into a single source, and maintains a smoothly and exponentially increasing cross-sectional area for the full length of the waveguide to an output port located close to the center of the module. The curved external surfaces of the upper and lower sections of adjacent modules continue the exponentially-increasing cross-sectional area to create a horn-shaped final output mouth for the sound energy. The separation between vertically adjacent exiting surfaces of multiple modules is minimized for the purpose of improved intelligibility, maximum acoustic range, and lower distortion.

  • Patent number: 6190859
Abstract: An inactivated dengue virus vaccine to immunize and protect humans against dengue fever is described. The vaccine is based on dengue viruses which have been propagated to high titers in suitable cells, purified and inactivated under conditions which destroy infectivity but preserve immunogenicity, a high level of which is demonstrated in animal models. Uses of the inactivated dengue virus for detecting antibodies to dengue and kits therefor are also described.

  • Patent number: 5871361
Abstract: A kit for students to carry out biotechnology experiments in a classroom, comprising a plurality of first containers, each of the first containers containing a sample of a prepared substance for use in the experiments; at least one of the prepared substances including a biologically derived constituent; each of the prepared substances having constituents selected for their safety in a classroom experiment, while being representative of a substance used in an industrial experiment. A plurality of second containers are also provided, the second containers being arranged to receive a number of test samples of substances to be tested. A number of aids are also provided to allow the students to carry out the experiments in the absence of instrumentation used in the industrial experiment, along with a set of instructions to permit the students to carry out the classroom experiment and thereby to better understand the industrial experiment.

  • Patent number: 5168779
Abstract: An opener for a videotape cassette case of the type having a body and a cover hinged to the body, the body and cover presenting two parallel spaced-apart flanges when the case is closed. The opener includes a rigid element, which may be a flat plate, having a shoulder portion wider than the spacing between the case flanges when the case is closed, the shoulder portion tapering toward a nose portion which is narrower than the spacing between the case flanges when the case is closed. A closed videotape cassette case is opened by inserting the nose portion of the opener into one end of the space between the flanges and moving the case with respect to the opener so as to bring the shoulder portion between the flanges to urge the flanges apart. Continued movement of the case with respect to the shoulder portion of the opener causes the flanges to progressively separate from each other so as to pry the cover from the body and thereby open the case.
