Patent number: 7515165Abstract: Various systems, methods, and programs embodied on a computer-readable medium are provided for calibrating a laser power in an optical disc drive. In one embodiment, a plurality of marked segments of a calibration pattern are created on a label surface of an optical disc with a laser in the optical disc drive. The marked segments are created by the application of assorted quanta of radiant energy from the laser. The reflectivity of the marked segments is measured. Ultimately, the laser power of a laser in the optical disc drive is set for writing a label based upon the reflectivities measured for each of the marked segments for each quantum of radiant energy.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2004Date of Patent: April 7, 2009Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: D. Mitchel Hanks, Kevin L. Colburn, Lawrence N. Taugher, Andrew L. Van Brocklin, Daryl E. Anderson, Michael A. Pate

Publication number: 20080291799Abstract: Various systems, methods, and programs embodied on a computer-readable medium are provided for calibrating a laser power in an optical disc drive. In one embodiment, a range of reflectivity of an optical disc in the optical disc drive is established. A calibration pattern of marked segments is written to the optical disc and the reflectivity of the marked segments is measured. An average reflectivity is generated for each one of a plurality of laser power settings within the range of reflectivity, thereby obtaining a curve that depicts the average reflectivity with respect to the laser power settings. The laser power setting at a knee of the curve is identified and a slope of the curve at a position on the curve where the average reflectivity decreases as the laser power settings increase is determined. The laser power setting is calculated that results in a predefined darkness based upon the laser power setting at the knee and based upon the slope.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2008Publication date: November 27, 2008Applicant: HEWLETT-PACKARD DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, L.P.Inventors: D. Patent number: 7333126Abstract: For at least some layers of a number of stacked layers of an optical disc that correspond to different colors, an optical beam is selectively impinged on a region of the optical disc. The optical beam has a wavelength to which the layer is uniquely sensitive as compared to other of the layers, to sufficiently heat the layer so as to cause the region to change from at least substantially translucent to a color to which the layer corresponds.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2005Date of Patent: February 19, 2008Inventors: Lawrence N. Patent number: 7233557Abstract: A method is disclosed for positioning an optical labeling mechanism substantially close to a particular track of a labeling surface on an optical disk. The method can include the operation of positioning the optical labeling mechanism adjacent to the particular track. A further operation can be measuring a first surface texture of the labeling surface using the optical labeling mechanism. Another operation can involve positioning the optical labeling mechanism adjacent to a different track. A further operation can be moving the optical labeling mechanism from the different track toward the particular track location. Another operation can involve measuring a second surface texture of the labeling surface using the optical labeling mechanism. A further operation can be comparing the first and second surface textures to determine if the optical labeling mechanism is positioned substantially near the particular track.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2004Date of Patent: June 19, 2007Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Shane Shivji, Mitch Hanks, Kevin L. Patent number: 6765937Abstract: An apparatus and method for flexibly and precisely varying temporal placement and duration of pulses, within a train of high speed, high power optical pulses. The invention includes optics adapted for focusing on a layer of an information storage media. An optical pulse generator is coupled with the layer through the optics for generating a train of optical pulses, wherein each pulse has a respective temporal placement within the train and has a respective pulse duration. The respective pulse duration of each pulse is controlled by an amount of an analog duration control voltage, in accordance with a WRITE STRATEGY, which is based on a physical property of the layer of the information storage media. Similarly the respective temporal placement of each pulse is controlled by an amount of an analog temporal placement control voltage, in accordance with the WRITE STRATEGY.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2000Date of Patent: July 20, 2004Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Kevin L Miller, D Mitchel Hanks, Kevin L Colburn, Charles R Weirauch
