  • Publication number: 20210197076
Abstract: A portable information handling system interacts with a game controller through either a direct connection at a wired interface at the sides of opposing controller housings and the information handling system housing or through a bridge having a bridge housing that directly couples to the controller housing as a bridge to the information handling system, such as with a wireless interface. Embedded code executing on a controller processor in the controller housing supports a controller state machine that interacts directly with the information handling system or with a bridge state machine executing as embedded code on a bridge processor. Updates to the embedded code may be communicated both to and from the controller through the information handling system or the bridge.

  • Patent number: 11024224
Abstract: A portable information handling system folds a flexible display over a hinge and selectively adapts operating conditions to maintain constraints associated with folding the flexible display. Operating conditions are monitored and stored, then analyzed to adapt the constraints based upon system usage, such as historical temperature changes, a number of display folds, a number of display touches, and an amount of touch pressure.

  • Patent number: 11013987
Abstract: A portable information handling system interacts with a game controller through either a direct connection at a wired interface at the sides of opposing controller housings and the information handling system housing or through a bridge having a bridge housing that directly couples to the controller housing as a bridge to the information handling system, such as with a wireless interface. During a sliding coupling motion, pins of the controller housing wired interface move across pins of the bridge or information handling system wired interface. Analysis of the interface signals through a sliding coupling motion identifies the type of controller housing, such as a controller housing with game input devices or with extra functions like speaker audio and supplemental battery power.

  • Publication number: 20210149456
Abstract: A portable information handling system presents visual images with a flexible display disposed over separate housing portions rotationally coupled by a set of hinges having an opening defined between them. A multi-segmented support couples to the hinges in the opening to dispose a planar surface proximate the flexible display and extend plural parallel members up from the planar support between the hinges, the plural parallel members separating in response to rotation from a flat to a curved orientation.

  • Publication number: 20210034101
Abstract: A portable information handling system folds a flexible display over a hinge and selectively engages a brake that restricts hinge movement if a predetermined condition exists, such as a predetermined thermal state associate with potential damage to the flexible display. Heating and cooling elements increase or decrease the flexible display thermal state to fall within a constraint that supports folding and releases the hinge brake.

  • Publication number: 20210034117
Abstract: A portable information handling system supports a flexible OLED display film over housing portions rotationally coupled by a hinge by folding the OLED display film over the hinge. Hinge brackets that couple to the housing portions each have a helical member that extends into an associated helical guide of the hinge main body. Hinge bracket rotation translates through the helical guides for synchronized housing rotation. The hinge main body has first and second circular portions extending along its length to define first and second rotation axes about which the hinge brackets pivot so that the display film has space to fold in the closed position.

  • Publication number: 20210034109
Abstract: An information handling system processes information with processing components disposed in housing portions rotationally coupled by a hinge and presents the information as visual images at a flexible display film disposed over the hinge to fold when the hinge rotates the housing portions from an open to a closed position. A bezel fits over the outer perimeter having a rigid portion and a flexible portion. The bezel flexible portion fits over the flexible display film at the hinge to support display film folding having managed torsional and compressive forces.

  • Publication number: 20210034116
Abstract: A portable information handling system supports a flexible OLED display film over housing portions rotationally coupled by a hinge by folding the OLED display film over the hinge. Hinge brackets that couple to the housing portions each have a gear member with a semicircular shape gear inner circumference that engages a gear subassembly of the hinge main body. Hinge bracket rotation translates through the gear subassembly for synchronized housing rotation. The hinge main body has first and second semicircular portions with a smooth surface defined to accept the outer circumference smooth surface of the gear member semicircular shape at first and second rotation axes about which the hinge brackets pivot so that the display film has space to fold in the closed position.

  • Publication number: 20210018963
Abstract: A portable information handling system integrates a sliding support with interlaced fingers below a flexible display to adjust support the display based upon rotational orientation of housing portions of the information handling system. In a closed position, the sliding support compresses by fully engaging the fingers so that room is provided over a hinge assembly that rotationally couples the housing to provide folding of the flexible display without wrinkling or compression.

  • Patent number: 10817082
Abstract: A portable information handling system folds a flexible display over a hinge and selectively engages a stylus writing tip to make inputs at the flexible display based upon operating conditions of the flexible display. For instance, an information handling system communicates to a stylus a pressure constraint determined from current and historical operating conditions so that the stylus restricts excessive pressure from application to the display, such as by automatically selecting a writing tip with a greater surface area.

  • Patent number: 10712832
Abstract: Embodiments of systems and methods for on-screen keyboard detection for multi-form factor Information Handling Systems (IHSs) are described. In an illustrative, non-limiting embodiment, an IHS may include a processor; and a memory coupled to the processor, the memory having program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by the processor, cause the IHS to: detect a keyboard using a magnetic sensor; and determine, in response to the detection, a position of the keyboard relative to a display surface of a second display, where the second display is coupled to a first display via a hinge.

  • Patent number: 10712784
Abstract: An information handling system having rotationally coupled housing portions supports a flexible display disposed across the housing portions with a hinge structure that manages flexible display curve radius in a folded configuration. A set of plural hinges having five geared rotational portions interconnect with a bar fixedly coupled to the center hinge rotational portion. The bar presses against a shape memory alloy support that manages curve radius of a flexible display during rotation of the hinges.

  • Patent number: 10510500
Abstract: In some examples, a computing device may include a first housing coupled to a second housing. The first housing may include a first set of components including a display device. The second housing may include a second set of components including a keyboard and a light source that emits light. An individual key of the keyboard may include one or more lenses. The one or more lenses may focus the light towards an area below an individual keycap of the individual key. For example, the one or more lenses may be integrated into a scissor mechanism of the individual key. The keycap may include an opaque material into which is embedded a character or a symbol made of a transparent or translucent material through which the light is visible.

  • Patent number: 10429904
Abstract: An information handling system having rotationally coupled housing portions supports a flexible display disposed across the housing portions with a hinge structure that manages flexible display curve radius in a folded configuration. A dual axis synchronized hinge defines the flexible display bend radius by the distance between the hinge axes and by a shape memory alloy planar support fixed in position relative to the hinge. A ramp structure engages a flexible display frame during rotation to an open position to maintain the display frame in a planar configuration.
