Publication number: 20110100643Abstract: A method for opening a port through the wall of a ported sub including: providing a sub with a port through its tubular side wall; providing a hydraulically actuable valve to cover the port, the valve being actuable to move away from a position covering the port to thereby open the port; increasing pressure within the sub to create a pressure differential across the valve to move the valve toward the low pressure side, while the port remains closed by the valve; thereafter, reducing pressure within the sub to reduce the pressure differential; and driving the valve to move it away from a position covering the port.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 28, 2010Publication date: May 5, 2011Applicant: PACKERS PLUS ENERGY SERVICES INC.Inventors: DANIEL JON THEMIG, KEVIN O. Patent number: 7004257Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for cutting tubulars in a wellbore. In one aspect of the invention, a cutting tool having radially disposed rolling element cutters is provided for insertion into a wellbore to a predetermined depth where a tubular therearound will be cut into an upper and lower portion. The cutting tool is constructed and arranged to be rotated while the actuated cutters exert a force on the inside wall of the tubular, thereby severing the tubular therearound. In one aspect, the apparatus is run into the well on wireline which is capable of bearing the weight of the apparatus while supplying a source of electrical power to at least one downhole motor which operates at least one hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump operates a slip assembly to fix the downhole apparatus within the wellbore prior to operation of the cutting tool. Thereafter, the pump operates a downhole motor to rotate the cutting tool while the cutters are actuated.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2004Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, IncInventors: Neil A. Patent number: 6325148Abstract: Methods, apparatus and tools to be used with tubular expansion apparatus. In one aspect of the invention, tools are actuated or operated within a well by selectively expanding the tool wall. To actuate the tool, the tool wall is urged outward past its elastic limits. The expanding wall physically unlocks a locking ring which then unlocks a piston. Thereafter, hydraulic pressure differences are employed to move the piston to operate the downhole tool. In another aspect of the invention, a first piece of casing is joined to a second, larger diameter casing. By expanding the diameter of the first piece of casing into contact with the second piece of casing, the two are joined together. The joint is formed with helical formations in a manner that provides flow paths around the intersection of the two members for the passage of cement or other fluid.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1999Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventors: Kevin O. Patent number: 5685373Abstract: An apparatus and process are provided for drilling and completing multiple subterranean wells from a template which is secured within a cased well bore extending to the surface. An orienting cam having a bore therethrough is positioned above the template such that the bore through the orienting cam is automatically aligned with one of at least two bores through the template. Fluid tight seals are provided between the orienting cam and the casing and between the orienting cam and one of the at least two bores through the template. Thereafter, a drill string including a drill bit is lowered from the surface of the earth through the casing, the bore through the orienting cam and the one bore through said template to drill a first subterranean well bore.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1995Date of Patent: November 11, 1997Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventors: Gary J. Patent number: 5560426Abstract: The invention relates to actuation of a downhole tool by hydraulic forces in a structure that does not employ lateral openings through the wall of the tool. By a variety of mechanisms, the tool wall is urged to flex preferably within its elastic limits. The wall flexing either signals a sensor which senses such motion to create a corresponding signal which can unlock a piston. Thereafter, hydraulic pressure differences are employed to move the piston to operate the downhole tool.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1995Date of Patent: October 1, 1996Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Kevin O. Trahan, John L. Baugh

Patent number: 5477925Abstract: The present invention relates to art improved method for multilateral completion and cementing (e.g. sealing) the juncture between primary and lateral wellbores. The completion method of the present invention addresses the issue of cementation and sealing of junctures between vertical and lateral wellbores. It is desirable to have the ability to re-enter each lateral wellbore as well as maintain the option to perform any function that could be done in a single wellbore. For this reason, cemented and sealed lateral wellbores are desirable so that normal isolation, stimulation or any other operation can be achieved. The method allows sealing and reworking of either wellbores with single laterals or multiple laterals and provides safe durable junctions therebetween. The method of this invention utilizes a "hook" liner hanger system.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1994Date of Patent: December 26, 1995Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Kevin O. Trahan, Rodney D. Bennett, John L. Baugh, Christiaan D. Krauss

Patent number: 5433275Abstract: An anchor assembly may be used for interconnecting a downhole tubular member with a packer affixed within a well bore. The anchor assembly may include a mandrel fixedly secured to production tubing, and a collet mechanism axially movable relative to the mandrel. The collet mechanism may have a plurality of axially extending collet fingers each having a first plurality of threads for mating engagement with the packer mandrel threads and a second plurality of threads for mating engagement with the anchor assembly mandrel threads. A sealed member is provided for sealing engagement between the mandrel and the downhole packer. The anchor assembly of the present invention allows substantial axial forces to be transmitted between the production tubing and the set packer without risking collapse of the packer mandrel or failure of the bearing surfaces between the production tubing mandrel and the collet mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1994Date of Patent: July 18, 1995Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: George J. Melenyzer, J. Lindley Baugh, Kevin O. Trahan
