Abstract: A media element library includes two linear arrays of media elements. Positioned between the two media element arrays is a linearly extending track on which a media element transfer carriage is mounted. The track is split into two segments, with one of the segments being rotatable. The rotatable segment pivots through 180 degrees so that the media element transfer carriage can access both arrays of media elements as well as tape drives provided within the library.

Abstract: A media element library includes a magazine of media element storage locations comprising at least one cell adjacent to an opening in the housing. The cell may be moveable so as to extend toward the opening in the housing of the media element library, thereby facilitating user access to a media element stored in the moveable cell.

Abstract: A data storage and retrieval system minimizes mechanical complexity and maximizes system flexibility by providing a modular rack mountable system which includes a passive transfer carriage for transferring media elements within the system. An active transfer carriage including a picker which is adapted to engage a notch on the media elements is also provided. The active transfer carriage may transfer media elements to the passive transfer carriage, and may also retrieve them from the passive transfer carriage. Drive actuation is automated with an extendable plunger which is adapted to engage an end of an actuation arm coupled to a media element reader such as a tape drive.

Abstract: A dot matrix print head assembly comprising a plurality of print wire members mounted in a wire guide housing and being operably associated with rigid armature members and electromagnet units in an electromagnetic drive housing with a transverse pivotal edge on each of the armature members pivotally supported by a flat pole end surface; the electromagnetic unit comprising a coil and a bobbin connected to a printed circuit board; and the electromagnetic unit being surrounded by and fixedly located within a block of plastic material.
