  • Patent number: 9094898
Abstract: A method and apparatus adaptively scan communication channels to find a channel having a desired attribute such as being usable for communication with a home network in one of a plurality of communication modes. A first scan of a first set of channels is performed, and attributes are assigned to channels. If a channel having the desired attribute is not found, the attributes are used to configure a second scan of a second set of channels using a second scan mode, such that the expected amount of resources consumed in the second scan is reduced, for example by scanning channels more likely to be usable for communication first. The second scan of a second set of channels is performed, and additional attributes are assigned to channels. If a channel having the desired attribute is found during the first or second scan, the scan may terminate.

  • Patent number: 8964549
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for managing communications of a wireless device in a wireless communication system based on network traffic level, and a wireless device comprising a control system configured to evaluate a network traffic level. The wireless device may be configured to transmit data, such as delay-tolerant data, based upon the network traffic level, for example transmitting data only under low traffic conditions. Deferring delay-tolerant communications may result in lower peak traffic conditions in the network. Evaluating the network traffic level may comprise measuring chip energy over total energy (Ec/Io), monitoring data on shared control channels such as HS-SCCH of a HSDPA system, inferring power allocated to channels by a dynamic power allocation scheme, or other methods.

  • Patent number: 8494551
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for performing position area updates in a wireless communication system configured to broadcast a plurality of position area codes, each associated with one of a plurality of position areas. The method comprises moving the wireless terminal from a first position area to a second position area; evaluating a predetermined condition; and performing the position area update when the predetermined condition is met.

  • Patent number: 6409472
Abstract: A stator assembly for a rotary machine having a shroud for a stator vane is disclosed. Various construction details are developed which limit movement of the stator vane into the flowpath by reason of the stator vane being restrained by the shroud. In one particular embodiment, a clip member extends through an opening in the tip of the vane and is disposed at a location adjacent a nonflowpath surface of the shroud to restrain the tip of the vane against inward movement through the shroud.

  • Patent number: 6212770
Abstract: A method for forming a rotor assembly for guiding motion of one circumferentially extending structure with respect to a second structure is disclosed. Various steps of the method are developed and include forming a pin for receiving a rotatable element for the roller assembly. In one particular embodiment the method includes forming the pin with a one-piece head and trapping the rotatable element between the pin and support structure for the pin.

  • Patent number: 6161839
Abstract: The invention is a valve seal assembly (43) illustrated in the context of a compressor bleed valve (36) for a gas turbine engine. The seal assembly includes a seal carrier (44) having a circumferentially extending groove (72) bordered by a pair of opposing flanges (74). The flanges cooperate to define a recess (76) portion of the groove and a throat (78) portion of the groove. The seal assembly also includes one or more seal elements (46) each having a base (82), conformal with the recess, and longitudinally captured in the recess by the flanges. A stem (84) extends from the base and projects through the throat, and a sealing bead (86) extends from the stem. An insert (88) extends circumferentially in the base for stiffening the base about a circumferential bending axis (C). An access port (96) facilitates installation and removal of the seal elements (46) and a cover (98) traps the seal elements in the carrier (44).

  • Patent number: 6106227
Abstract: A roller assembly for guiding the motion of a circumferentially extending ring in a gas turbine engine, where the roller assembly has a pin and a collar. The pin has a head which engages a rotatable element, which in turn adapts the roller assembly to engage a track and which adapts the roller assembly to receive an external force from the track under operative conditions, causing a reactive force on the rotatable element to resist the external force. A gap formed between a shank of the pin and the collar decreases the bending stresses in the shank in comparison to forces acting on the pin at an end of the collar which engages a support.
