  • Patent number: 10584550
Abstract: A system for obtaining a core sample from a wellbore includes a housing having a core opening at a first end of the housing and an end wall at a second end of the housing. A balancing piston is positioned within the housing to define a sample chamber between the balancing piston and the core opening. An equalization chamber is defined between the balancing piston and the end wall. A core piston is sealingly positioned in the core opening.

  • Patent number: 9957764
Abstract: Described herein is a cutting apparatus (100) for allowing visual inspection of a core sample in an inner tube at a drilling site after the inner tube has been removed from a coring tube and prior to it being transported to a laboratory. The cutting apparatus (100) comprises a support track (110, 112, 114, 116)) on which is mounted a tube support member (120), a cutter wagon (130, 132, 138) and a drive arrangement (140, 142, 144, 146). The apparatus (100) provides relative movement between an inner tube (150) and the cutter wagon (130, 132, 138) to allow a section of the inner tube (150) to be removed along its entire length for visual inspection. The drive arrangement (140, 142, 144, 146) provides the relative movement between the inner tube (150) and the cutter wagon (130, 132, 138).

  • Patent number: 9869146
Abstract: Described herein is an inner tube for a core barrel which has a structure adapted to retain lubricant for lubricating a sampled core. The internal surface of the inner tube includes a plurality of structures to retain lubricant adjacent a core received in the inner tube. An example structure is multiple alveoli in which lubricant is retained.

  • Patent number: 9810025
Abstract: A method of hydraulically activating a mechanically operated wellbore tool in a bottom hole assembly includes: holding moveable elements of the wellbore tool in an unactivated position using a shear pin; inserting one or more drop balls into a drilling fluid; and flowing the drilling fluid with the drop balls to a flow orifice located in or below the wellbore tool. The flow orifice is at least partially plugged with the drop balls to restrict fluid flow and correspondingly increases the hydraulic pressure of the drilling fluid. The hydraulic pressure is increased to a point beyond the rating of the shear pin, thereby causing the shear pin to shear and allowing the moveable elements of the tool to move to an activated position.
