  • Publication number: 20050169220
Abstract: A method includes connecting a mobile router (MR), also referred to herein as a gateway mobile terminal, of a mobile network (MONET) to an access point (AP) of an access network (AN) that includes an Access Router (AR); making a request to obtain a plurality of link addresses from a link address manager of the AN; allocating individual ones of the plurality of link addresses to individual ones of network nodes of the MONET; and performing a neighbor discovery procedure with the AR to send at least one neighbor advertisement to declare the allocated individual ones of the assigned plurality of link addresses. In one embodiment the request is made to obtain a set of link layer addresses (LLAs) that are allocated to individual ones of the network nodes, while in another embodiment the request is made to obtain a group identification (Group_ID) that is used to formulate a set of LLAs that are allocated to individual ones of the network nodes.

  • Publication number: 20050147042
Abstract: A “loose ACK” method by which a radio access network of a cellular network monitors wireless transmission of packets according to a layered protocol including a radio layer (near the physical layer) and an upper layer, the method including: a step (23) of slow release—in what is called normal buffer management—in which the upper layer removes from a buffer maintained by the upper layer the oldest packet in the buffer when the buffer is full and a new packet arrives, and does so independently of whether the packet being removed has been acknowledged by the radio layer of the terminal; and a step (24) of local acknowledgement in which the radio layer sends an acknowledgement to the upper layer on the occurrence of a predetermined event. The local acknowledgement can trigger either special mode buffer management or release of the buffer to a target (entity or layer).

  • Publication number: 20050086383
Abstract: A method of optimizing the compression efficiency in a packet data communication where a compression history of previous packets is used for the compression of a current packet, the method including: updating the compression history selectively, wherein the selection is performed based on a first algorithm whether a packet shall be compressed, and on a second algorithm whether a compressed packet shall be used for an update of the compression history. The compressor can be enabled to safely infer a subset of the context at the decompressor by simply monitoring the Transmission Control Protocol acknowledgment signaling, wherein that subset is used as a context for compression.

  • Patent number: 6882625
Abstract: A method for scheduling data packets from a plurality of flows into a single flow. Data packets are broken into data segments and assigned a slack value based on how long the segment can wait until transmission begins. Every time a transmission opportunity passes, the slack value of the segment is decreased. The scheduler prioritizes the segments based on their slack value.

  • Publication number: 20050013245
Abstract: A method and equipment for accelerating throughput of communication segments from a sender (30) to a receiver (40) each of which include a protocol layer (30a 40a) for providing such segments, the method in case of TCP including a first step (20a) in which the sender protocol layer (30a) initializes a congestion window (cwnd) to some initial size (iwnd) and increases the congestion window by one segment each time it receives an ACK, but upon receiving an indication of low congestion, performs a step (20c) of accelerated start in which it sets a slow start threshold (SSTHRES) to a standard initial value (typically 65535) and re-initializes cwnd to a new value, and the sender protocol layer (30a) then increments cwnd at one or another predetermined rate—depending on whether the start immediately follows a new connection or instead follows a transfer of an existing connection to a new path—in respect to received ACKs.

  • Patent number: 6711164
Abstract: A method and apparatus operable in a system having a transmitter and receiver for reducing the overhead for compressing headers of a plurality of packets that form a transmission unit, wherein the header of each packet includes identification (ID) information identifying the packets as part of the transmission unit. The invention operates by reassembling the packets that form the transmission unit and removing the ID information from the header of each of the packets that form the transmission unit. After removing the ID information from the header of each packets, the headers of the packets are compressed and the packets having the compressed headers are transmitted from the transmitter to a receiver. The receiver upon receiving the packets having the compressed headers, decompresses the compressed headers to obtain the packets that form the transmission unit.

  • Patent number: 6680955
Abstract: A timer based header compression/decompression technique and timer and reference based technique are provided. A source generates a header field, such as an RTP time stamp. A packet including the header field is sent to a compressor which calculates a compressed header field based on the header field of the packet from the source and a jitter quantity. The compressed header field is calculated by calculating a jitter effect the network before the compressor has on the transmission of packets and calculating a jitter effect the network between the compressor and a decompressor has on the transmission of packets. The packet including the compressed header field is transmitted to a decompressor which includes a local timer. The decompressor decompresses the compressed header field by calculating an approximation of the header field based on the elapsed time since the arrival of a previous packet and the field value in the previous packet.

  • Publication number: 20040008650
Abstract: A mobile station (100) and a compression/decompression node in a wireless network (5), preferably the GGSN 30 (30), agree on whether to apply compression/decompression, and what compression/decompression scheme to use either by pre-configuration (when the GGSN 30 is in the home network of the mobile terminal) or by signalling (when the GGSN 30 is in a visited or a roamed-to network). Additional information, such as a profile-specific dictionary, may be used to increase the compression efficiency, particularly during start-up. Dynamic data can also be accommodated. The compression/decompression may be turned on and off on a packet-by-packet basis, depending on whether the compression actually results in a smaller packet. A compressed/uncompressed indicator bit or bits can be inserted explicitly on a per packet basis, and/or the compressed/uncompressed indication can be derived implicitly.
