  • Publication number: 20110236246
Abstract: A method of producing a permanent magnet includes: melting boron, cobalt, a metallic alloy component, a mixed rare earth material, and iron together to form a melted alloy and forming a first alloy ingot using the melted alloy, wherein the permanent magnet comprises about 28-35 weight percent of rare earth material; crushing the first alloy ingot into particles having a first average particle diameter less than about 3 millimeters; milling the particles to form a powder mixture with a second average particle diameter in the range from about 2.

  • Publication number: 20110221552
Abstract: The present disclosure is generally directed towards magnetization of permanent magnets using superconducting magnetizers. For example, in one embodiment, a superconducting magnetizer assembly is provided. The assembly includes a coil pack having an inner coil including a first superconducting magnet material, the coil being configured to generate a first magnetic field in response to an electric current supplied to the coil, and an outer coil including a second superconducting magnet material, the outer coil being disposed about the inner coil and being configured to generate a second magnetic field in response to an electric current supplied to the outer coil. The coil pack also includes a container configured to house the inner and the outer coils.

  • Publication number: 20110140552
Abstract: A stator assembly includes a segmented stator having stator portions. Each stator portion includes stator laminations having stator windings, spacer plates having a portion embedded within the stator laminations, and structural plates having a portion embedded within the stator laminations. The portion of each of the spacer plates and each of the structural plates has notch-like structures that create openings to allow a cooling medium to flow between the notch-like structures to provide radial cooling of the stator windings. Connectors are provided to connect the stator portions of the segmented stator together.

  • Publication number: 20110133590
Abstract: A rotor structure for an interior permanent magnet (IPM) electromotive machine is provided. The rotor structure may include at least one rotor lamination, which in turn may include at least one slot arranged to receive at least one permanent magnet. The slot divides the rotor lamination into a pole region and a yoke region. At least one bridge is arranged to connect the pole region to the yoke region at an outer edge of the lamination. The outer edge of the lamination is profiled along a segment of the bridge to define a concave curved profile for the bridge. The concave curved profile for the bridge allows to selectively size a thickness of the bridge to affect at least some electromagnetic and/or mechanical characteristic of the machine.

  • Publication number: 20110133871
Abstract: A superconducting magnetizer includes a thermal shield disposed within a vacuum chamber. A superconducting magnet is disposed within the thermal shield and configured to generate a magnetic field in response to an electric current supplied to the superconducting magnet. A heat transfer device comprising at least one of a thermal conduction device, and a heat pipe is disposed contacting the superconducting magnet. A cryocooler is coupled to the heat transfer device and configured to cool the superconducting magnet via the heat transfer device.

  • Publication number: 20100019604
Abstract: A homopolar electrical machine includes a stator having a stationary magnetic core and multiple stator windings disposed within the stationary magnetic core. A rotor includes a first set of pole pieces at a first end of a shaft and a second set of pole pieces at a second end of the shaft. The pole pieces are separated by air gaps. The rotor is a one-piece structure having only the shaft, the first set of pole pieces, and the second set of pole pieces integrally formed from a single material. A stationary field coil is coupled to the stator. The stationary field coil includes a cryostat configured to cool the stationary field coil to superconducting temperatures. The stationary field coil has a coil diameter that is at least partially greater than an outer diameter of the rotor.
