  • Publication number: 20040046146
Abstract: The invention concerns refrigerant compositions which comprise a hydrofluorocarbon based refrigerant and, mixed with the refrigerant, a polyol ester based lubricant. According to the invention the polyol ester comprises a diol having a strongly sterically hindered hydrogen attached to the carbon in position 2, said diol being esterified with a mixture of mono- and diabasic carboxylic acids. In particular the diol is 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol or 1,4-dimethylol-cyclohexane. The complex esters in refrigerant mixtures have good lubricant properties and good solubility in HFC compounds.

  • Patent number: 6436309
Abstract: The invention concerns a refrigerant composition which comprises a chlorine-free hydrofluorocarbon based refrigerant and, mixed with the refrigerant, a lubricant comprising a polyol ester. According to the invention the polyol ester comprises an ester of 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propane diol, the carboxylic acid residue of which is derived from a linear or branched C4 . . . C8-carboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof, or it is derived from a mixture of linear or branched C4 . . . C18-carboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof. The present invention also concerns novel complex esters of 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol, which contain residues of mono- or bivalent carboxylic acids. The novel esters exhibit good solubility in fluorinated hydrocarbons and excellent lubricating properties.

  • Patent number: 5663452
Abstract: The invention relates to a new, technically simple but efficient process, with a good yield, for the preparation of 2-ethyl-1,3-hexane diol from n-butyraldehyde by aldol condensation in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkali earth metal hydroxide catalyst. To promote the reaction and to improve its controllability, a neutral phase-transfer catalyst is additionally used in the process according to the invention. 2-Ethyl-1,3-hexane diol is used in insecticides and, for example, in the preparation of polyesters.

  • Patent number: 5618985
Abstract: The invention relates to a novel, technically simple but efficient and high-yield process for the preparation of 2-n-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propane diol from 2-ethyl hexanal and formaldehyde by using a basic alkali metal hydroxide or earth alkali metal hydroxide catalyst. In the process according to the invention, cationic or neutral phase transfer catalysts are additionally used for promoting the reaction. The correct choice of the sources of the initial material components is also essential. 2-n-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propane diol is used, for example, in the paint industry in the preparation of pulverous paints.

  • Patent number: 5166413
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of diols of the general formula (I) ##STR1## and monoesters thereof of the general formula (II) ##STR2## and the general formula (III) ##STR3## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same of different groups and each denotes a lower alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, preferably a methyl group. The process of this invention comprises condensing in a multi-phase reaction environment an aldehyde containing a hydrogen atom in the alpha position and having the general formula (IV) ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 having the meaning given above, in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of a phase transferring catalyst and an alkaline substance.

  • Patent number: 5130469
Abstract: The present invention concerns N-acyl or N-alkyl derivatives of N,N-bis(2,2-dimethyl-2-carboxyethyl)amine ##STR1## in which R and R" are similar or different C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl or aryl groups, R" is a C.sub.3 -C.sub.12 -alkyl or aralkyl group which may contain an ester group in the carbon chain. Said derivatives are prepared by condensing ammonium halide or ammonium sulphate, formaldehyde and isobutyraldehyde, by oxidizing the condensation product thus obtained into acid form, by esterifying, and finally, by N-acylating or N-alkylating. The obtained compounds can be used for plasticizing, stabilizing, lubricating and anticorrosive agents, and for metal complexing agent for polymers, in particular polymers and polymer mixtures of vinyl chloride.
