  • Publication number: 20080289405
Abstract: The invention concerns a method to determine the composition of a fuel mixture from a first and at least a second fuel for the operation of an internal combustion engine with at least one combustion chamber, wherein the first and the second fuel have different boiling points and/or different enthalpies of evaporation. Provision is thereby made for the composition of the fuel mixture to be ascertained from the pressure in the combustion chamber and/or a parameter associated with the pressure and/or the time history of the pressure and/or the time history of a parameter associated with the pressure during and/or after an injection of fuel during a compression phase of the fuel-air mixture. An advantage of the method according to the invention is that when initially starting the engine after filling the tank (fueling), the fuel mixture ratio, which resulted from the filling of the tank (fueling), can already hereby be determined.

  • Publication number: 20050210867
Abstract: A method for operating an internal combustion engine and a device for implementing the method, in which a diagnosis is performed of an adjusting device situated in the exhaust duct of the internal combustion engine, which distributes the exhaust gas between a first and at least one second exhaust gas path. A transit time from a change of a characteristic quantity of the exhaust gas in front of the adjusting device until the appearance behind the adjusting device detected by a sensor is compared to a specified transit time threshold value. The transit time threshold value is specified as a function of a setpoint position of the adjusting device. In the event of a deviation from or exceedance of the threshold value, a fault signal is provided.

  • Patent number: 6918288
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for detecting combustion misfires in multi-cylinder internal combustion engines having several simultaneously igniting cylinders wherein, for each crankshaft rotation, rough running values are determined by measuring segment times, the segment times including the times, which correspond to the piston movement of individual cylinders after their ignition time point, wherein the crankshaft passes through an associated circular segment angular region. A combustion misfire is determined in the affected crankshaft circular segment regions from the determined rough running values LUT for crankshaft segment regions having several simultaneously igniting cylinders via a desired value comparison to a threshold value SW2, which is lower in value than the threshold value SW1 for the misfire check in crankshaft segment regions having individually igniting cylinders.

  • Patent number: 6862878
Abstract: A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine, in particular of a motor vehicle, which allow detecting a function of at least one actuating element in an exhaust branch without an additional sensory system. The internal combustion engine includes exhaust-gas recirculation via which exhaust gas is conveyed from the exhaust branch to an intake manifold in an activated state. The internal combustion engine includes at least one actuating element in the exhaust branch. In at least one operating state of the internal combustion engine, given activated exhaust-gas recirculation, a first intake-manifold pressure is ascertained in a first position of the at least one actuating element in the exhaust branch, and a second intake-manifold pressure in a second position of the at least one actuating element in the exhaust branch. The function of the at least one actuating element in the exhaust branch is monitored as a function of a difference between the first and the second intake-manifold pressures.

  • Patent number: 6857400
Abstract: A method for controlling the compression ratio ? in a supercharged combustion engine. The latter is provided with a control device in which a maximum final compression temperature T2,max is ascertained, and, within the framework of a precontrol, an optimum efficiency compression ratio ?opt is ascertained. The knock limit is determined from the compression ratio ?, to which it corresponds, and which is ascertained from the precontrol. As a function of the efficiency curve in the characteristics map ?=f, a further change occurs in compression ratio ? or a setting back of the change in compression ratio ?. The values learned for ? and the ignition angle as a function of the operating point are permanently stored in a characteristics map to which the engine control has access.
