  • Patent number: 6349641
Abstract: A feeder unit for a sheet-processing machine having a plurality of processing units is provided. The feeder unit includes a feeder, a feed table, and a feed drum. The feed drum is double-sized or larger in that it has a diameter at least twice that of the diameter of the plate or blanket cylinder of at least one of the processing units of the sheet-processing machine. The feed drum includes at least two gripper systems distributed symmetrically on a periphery of the feed drum. The feed drum is arranged with its rotational axis on or offset vertically above a horizontal plane formed by the rotational axes of the printing cylinders in the processing units. Each gripper system is pivotally supported on the feed drum and includes a gripper shaft, at least one gripper arranged on the gripper shaft, a gripper stop bar associated with the gripper, and a front guide arranged on the gripper stop bar.

  • Patent number: 6343548
Abstract: A sheet-fed printing machine having a control console at the downstream end of a sheet transfer system which transfers printed sheets to a delivery unit. The control console has an inclined proof sheet support surface disposed in direct overlying relation to the delivery unit and sheet transfer system upon which a proof sheet withdrawn from the delivery unit may be positioned and assessed for quality. The support surface further includes control elements for directly adjusting and controlling printing quality based upon assessment of the proof sheet. With the control console support surface in overlying relation to the sheet transfer system and the delivery unit, the support surface is at a height which can be comfortably used by an operator of average height and does not impede access to the end of the printing machine nor increase its overall length.

  • Patent number: 6089155
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus turning a sheet in a printing machine. More specifically, a swing arm is provided to grip a trailing edge of a sheet delivered on a first cylinder and transfer the gripped edge to a second cylinder. The invention provides low-outlay sheet-turning apparatus which provides smear-free sheet transportation. In conjunction with the swing arm, the second cylinder has secant-like flattened sections, or a non-circular cross-section, forming clearance areas within an outer circumference of the second cylinder as defined by a rotary path of radially outward portions of the second cylinder. In face-and-reverse printing mode, these clearances enable the swing arm to synchronously travel a sheet-feed path which intersects the circumference of the second cylinder. With this motion the swing arm draws the sheet from the first cylinder in a substantially tangential manner, avoiding dramatic curving of the sheet.

  • Patent number: 5732628
Abstract: A sheet-conveying drum for use between units in a printing machine is provided with a plurality of gripper bridges arranged substantially circumferentially symmetrically on the drum surface. The gripper bridges hold the paper on the drum and include gripper impact strips that are adjustable substantially radially relative to the drum in order to accommodate printing materials of different thickness. Each gripper impact strip is adjusted by means of a positioning device that is arranged on the drum radially inward of the gripper impact strip and mounted so that it can move axially relative to the drum and cam the gripper impact strip radially. The axial movement of the positioning devices is brought about by two actuating devices which are mounted opposite each other on the side frames of the printing machine. The actuating devices are preferably pneumatic cylinders and are adapted so that when they are extended they periodically engage adapters on the free ends of the positioning devices as the drum rotates.

  • Patent number: 5575209
Abstract: A pregripper for transferring sheets from a sheet feeder to a feed drum or impression cylinder of a printing machine is provided. The pregripper is disposed below the sheet feeder and includes a hollow tube which has a substantially pear-shaped cross-section. The pear-shaped cross-section is defined by a first apex having a greater curvature and a second apex having a lesser curvature relative to the first apex. The hollow tube also has an exterior wall having a thickness that increases as the wall extends from the first apex to the second apex. A web which supports a conventional gripper bridge is attached to the hollow tube adjacent the first apex. The hollow tube is rotatably supported on each end by a journal such that the axis of rotation of the hollow tube is substantially concentric with the center of curvature of the second apex.

  • Patent number: 5542657
Abstract: A semishell-shaped gripper apparatus for sheet-fed printing machines includes a gripper of low mass, which is fastened without play on the gripper shaft and minimizes the sliding of the gripper tip on the printing carrier. This is achieved by having the gripper finger surround the gripper shaft in such a way that separate effective engagement surfaces are formed. The effective engagement surfaces are disposed on the gripper shaft with frictional engagement and, in conjunction with the resultant force, form a triangle of forces. The gripper holder has a depression running parallel to the gripper shaft connecting to the lower edge of a web on the gripper finger in a releasably positive-locking manner. The gripper tip has a raised holding surface which has tapering radii on its periphery.

  • Patent number: 5465663
Abstract: A sheet-guiding drum for use in printing machines and having gripper links spaced uniformly around the periphery of the drum. Gripper contact strips of the gripper links are adjusted uniformly in order to accommodate different printing material thicknesses. Such adjustment is achieved by the provision of a drive motor in the journal of the drum, the drive motor being connected by a coupling to adjusters which extend radially from the center of the drum. Each adjuster moves a rod axially of the drum and effects radial adjustment of the associated contact strip by virtue of co-acting wedges carried by the rod and the contact strip.

  • Patent number: 5390893
Abstract: An easy to assemble mounting for the cylinders and drums of printing machines is provided which at the same time reduces journal flexing and guarantees a high degree of rigidity in the drive wheel train. The stub journal of a cylinder is received in the collar of a driving wheel. The collar is rotatably supported in a bearing disposed in one of the press side walls and the collar is connected to the journal by means of connecting elements including a centering plate, locating pins and appropriate screws.

  • Patent number: 4712475
Abstract: An inking roller for an offset printing machine, through the interior of which a temperature-control medium flows. The roller is formed of aluminum in a barrel shape with journals mounted at both ends. The cross-sections of the plurality of ducts formed in the wall of the barrel result in an optimally uniform surface temperature for the inking roller. On one side of the inking roller the ducts have openings so that the flow and return alternate inside the barrel. The opposite ends of the ducts communicate with openings which establish the counter flow of fluid through the barrel.
