    Abstract: A gasket for use in an engine exhaust system. The gasket includes a layer of ceramic fibers with particles of mica or vermiculite dispersed in the ceramic fibers. The mica or the vermiculite expands when it is heated and then the free dimension is increased after the heat is relieved so that the gasket thickness is increased after the first cycle of the heating and cooling. Thus, a positive gas sealing can be ensured even if thermal deformations are formed in the connecting flanges in the exhaust system.
