Publication number: 20230376354Abstract: Arranging computational sub-tasks in a hybrid-computing environment is provided. The method comprises receiving input of a number of nodes, wherein each node represents a computational sub-task, and wherein the nodes are grouped into different sets according to differing computing resources used by the nodes. A computational objective is also received as well as initial data inputs and desired final outputs. A directed graph network is generated comprising the nodes and directed edges connecting the nodes. An optimization problem is then solved to determine a best path through the directed graph network for deriving the desired final outputs from the initial data inputs according to the computational objective. The best path comprises a subset of nodes and directed edges within the directed graph network. The best path to achieve the computational objective and estimated computational resources required for the best path are output to a user.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 19, 2022Publication date: November 23, 2023Inventors: Richard Joel Thompson, Nam Hoang Nguyen, Kristen Smith Williams, Marna Kagele, John R. Publication number: 20230289501Abstract: A method of minimizing a cost function of a quantum computation is provided. The method comprises receiving input of an initial state of a quantum problem instance comprising a Hamiltonian with an associated cost function. The Hamiltonian is converted into a number of Pauli strings, which are used to form an operator pool. The Pauli strings in the operator pool are ranked according to how much they lower a value of the cost function with respect to the initial state. Pauli strings are iteratively added from the operator pool to a parameterized quantum circuit, in a manner to minimize circuit depth, until a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm converges to an approximate ground state wave function generated by the parameterized quantum circuit.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2022Publication date: September 14, 2023Inventors: Nam Hoang Nguyen, Richard Joel Thompson, John R. Lowell, Marna M. Kagele, Kristen Smith Williams

Patent number: 10380278Abstract: A method and apparatus for analyzing potential corrosion for a vehicle. Potential corrosion surfaces for the vehicle are identified using a model for the vehicle. The corrosion risks are predicted for each of the potential corrosion surfaces. The corrosion risks predicted are aggregated into a group of aggregated corrosion risks for a group of functional design units for the vehicle. A corrosion risk assessment for the vehicle is generated to identify a corrosion risk in the vehicle from the group of aggregated corrosion risks, and to enable a change in the model to reduce the identified corrosion risk.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2016Date of Patent: August 13, 2019Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Richard Joel Thompson, Elizabeth Killelea, Robert Michael Lawton, Kristen Smith Williams

Patent number: 10001485Abstract: The disclosure provides methods for determining the self-renewal potential of a cancer stem cell (CSC), or for predicting the drugability (susceptibility to a drug) of a CSC, and/or for predicting the progression of a cancer that corresponds to the CSC. In alternative embodiments, the disclosure provides methods for determining whether a CSC in a niche is more pro-apoptotic or more anti-apoptotic in relation to a normal stem cell or a CSC from another niche. In alternative embodiments, the disclosure provides methods for determining the prognosis or malignant potential of a cancer. In alternative embodiments, the disclosure provides methods determining the anti-apoptotic versus a pro-apoptotic potential of a cancer stem cell (CSC).Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2012Date of Patent: June 19, 2018Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Catriona H. Jamieson, Daniel Goff, Kristen Smith

Patent number: 7421980Abstract: A pet collar in which a leash attachment is connected to a back edge of the collar band, at a location generally opposite to the collar buckle, and extends rearwardly from the back edge, leaving the entire area of the collar band unobstructed by the leash attachment. Decorative elements can be attached to the collar in the region of the leash attachment, either directly or by means of a slide strip, without visual obstruction by, or mechanical interference from the leash attachment. The pet owner thus has a clear view the decorative elements when walking the pet on a leash.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2006Date of Patent: September 9, 2008Inventor: Kristen Smith Ehlers
