Abstract: A method of controlling a run mode of a video signal recording/reproducing apparatus is provided. More particularly, a method of controlling a special playback mode of a video signal reproducing apparatus, by rejecting a special playback key input during comparison of program classes in an initial playback mode, and restricting run of a special playback mode while a video signal loaded with program class data is being reproduced, is provided. The special playback key command, which is input while the video signal with program class data is being reproduced, is refused, thereby preventing pictures from being output regardless of program class, because the program class cannot be exactly detected in a special playback mode.

Abstract: A symbol decoding apparatus run-level-decodes corresponding symbol data using the same scan pattern data as used for run-level-encoding. A symbol separator separates the received run-level-encoded symbol data into run data and level data. An address outputter selects a particular scan pattern using the scan pattern data associated with the symbol data, and selects a scan address for storing the level data among the scan addresses corresponding to the selected scan pattern using the separated run data. A data store stores the level data supplied from the symbol separator at the storage position designated by the selected scan address. Thus, the run-level-encoded symbols are run-level-decoded based on the scan pattern used for run-level encoding and stored in a form appropriate for use in a downstream unit.

Abstract: A method for controlling a double-deck VCR during a tape duplication operation includes the steps of sensing the recording speed of a tape in an A deck, determining if an input signal for establishing a recording speed to be used by a B deck during the copying operations is provided, and transmitting the established recording speed to the B deck. When an input for establishing the recording speed is not provided, the recording speed of the tape in the A deck is selected as the established recording speed and is transmitted to the B deck. The sensing step includes the step of displaying using OSD (on-screen-display) characters displayed on a display device, the recording speed of the tape in the A deck. The determining step includes to step of displaying the established recording speed using corresponding OSD (on-screen-display) characters on the display device.
