A method comprises discovering a system configuration of the server 104 using an automated probing module 102. A networking policy and/or a storage policy may be selected by a user for the virtual machine 106 to operate on the server 104. The virtual machine 106 can then be automatically configured to operate on the server 104 using an automated configuration module 150 based on the selected networking policy and storage policy and the system configuration.
