  • Publication number: 20130260187
Abstract: A battery for downhole use configured for fluid-based replenishment. The battery may include separate anode and cathode fluid tanks which may be refilled at various times throughout the life of the well. Upon coupling of a replenishment tool to the battery, it may be fully replenished in a matter of minutes. Further, the nature of the fluid tanks allows for decreased battery bulk in even as increase power and life are afforded due to overall tank volume. Thus, with minimal total intervention time, extended life and replenishable character may be achieved for a battery well suited for use in downhole environments.

  • Patent number: 8535026
Abstract: A mechanism for moving elements in a fluid filled housing using a pump with the element to be moved attached rigidly to the pump or to a port assembly connected to the pump. The pump assembly or port assembly moves as a result of differential pressure created between a first and a second chamber separated from each other by the pump assembly or port assembly. Movement of the fluid in one direction increases or decreases pressure, the pressure change resulting in a net force in one direction or the other.

  • Publication number: 20130020088
Abstract: Systems and methods using enhanced flow control devices are described. The flow control devices can be selectively closed completely or have its effective flow area reduced to restrict production (or injection) by use of a chemical trigger mechanism. In addition, some of the systems described herein deploy specific targeted chemical tracers, dissolvable in the unwanted production fluid (e.g. water or gas). These chemical tracers once dissolved will enter the production stream and be identified at the surface. The identification will determine which segment of the completion is producing the unwanted fluid. According to some embodiments, an appropriate chemical trigger is placed, for example, by pumping down through the tubing and utilizing intelligent completion valve to place the chemical, or by spotting with coiled tubing and bullhead to the formation, or by other methods of chemical placement. The chemical trigger will only trigger the active chemical in the appropriate flow control device.

  • Publication number: 20120318532
Abstract: An elastomeric-based device configured for use in high temperature downhole environments exceeding about 400° F. The device includes a carbon nanotube mesh configured to dissipate heat relative elastomeric portions thereof so as to provide temperature resistance. Thus, a majority of modulus strength of the elastomeric portions may be maintained along with device functionality even upon exposure to such temperatures. Further, the mesh may also be configured to mimic the modulus character of elastomeric portions to allow a cohesive compliance to the device as a whole. Thus, isolation packers and other expansive downhole devices may particularly benefit from such combined material configurations as detailed herein.

  • Patent number: 8322417
Abstract: An actuator is disclosed which operates on the principle of the variable magnetic properties of materials with respect to temperature. As temperature is raised past Curie temperature, magnetic permeability of certain materials drops significantly to a value close to free space permeability. However, depending on the material selection, magnetic permeability may be significantly higher below Curie temperature. This principle is used to cause magnetic attractive force to move an actuator at one temperature, while permitting a return spring force to move the actuator at another temperature by changing the pathway traversed by most magnetic lines of flux from a magnetic source. The actuator may be employed to provide a temperature activated electrical switch or fluid valve. The temperature activated valves are suited to use in high temperature environments, such as SAGD wells.

  • Publication number: 20120182032
Abstract: A test mode controller comprises an enable signal generator, a control signal generator, and a latch. The enable signal generator receives a power signal and a second control signal, and generates a first enable signal and a second enable signal respectively to the latch and the control signal generator. The control signal generator receives a power indicating voltage and a reference voltage, and generates the first control signal to the latch when the first enable signal is enabled. The latch receives the first control signal, and generates the second control signal according to the first control signal when the second enable signal is enabled. The second control signal controls a chip to operate in a test mode or a normal mode. Accordingly, the test mode controller may reduce the test time without a test pin, and may also reduce the chip area and the package cost.
