Abstract: On pallets loaded with several layers (tiers 11), relatively thin intermediate layers 13 made of cardboard or the like are usually located between the tiers 11. These intermediate layers have to be removed after a tier 11 has been unloaded. For this purpose, a suction lifter 16 with a suction plate 17 is provided, which lifts and discharges the free intermediate layer by means of a vacuum. To avoid undesirable relative displacements of the stacked articles (blank stacks 12), the suction lifter 16 is provided with holding-down devices 22. These devices 22 pass through openings 23 in the intermediate layer 13 and come to abut the blank stacks 12, such that the latter are fixed in place when the intermediate layer 13 is lifted. Profile members 31 are arranged on the suction lifter 16 for further securing the articles (blank stacks 12). These members 31 enter cavities 32 formed between adjacent articles (blank stacks 12) in a form-fitting positive manner.

Abstract: Supplying material to high-performance packaging machines is difficult, above all during the processing of blanks (20) consisting of thin cardboard for hinge-lid packs. The arrangement of the blanks (20) within a continuous material web (23), the blanks (20) being connected to one another by means of easily severable material webs (33), allows a continuous conveyance in the region of the packaging machine. For the continuous transport of the blanks (20), the material web (23) is folded in a zigzag-shaped manner to form a blank strand (24) consisting of blanks (20) lying against one another. The blank strand can be conveyed in space by being deflected in all directions. For transporting the blank strand (24) and for fixing the zigzag folding there are conveyor bands (39, 40, 41, etc) which bear against the blanks (20) in the region of longitudinal edges (21, 22) and/or transverse edges (25, 26).

Abstract: In the production of packs made of (thin) cardboard such as cigarette packs, complex folding processes may cause problems when blank portions are moved to the proper pack position, especially when blank portions are "too long" for the folding process. To remove this problem, the respective blank portion is, during the folding process, temporarily deformed in a way which shortens its effective length, i.e. curved in an arched manner. In the production of hinge lid packs having a collar (11) attached to a front wall (12) thereof in a single piece, this blank portion is, while being folded from an upright to a horizontal position, temporarily curved by a folding lever (58) applying pressure until the blank portion reaches the horizontal folding position.
