  • Patent number: 10559319
Abstract: A method of forming a recording head for use with a data storage medium in a data storage device. The method includes forming first and second writers of different target geometries. A first recording measurement is performed on one or more storage media using the first writer. A second recording measurement is performed on the one or more storage media using the second writer. Based on a comparison of the first and second recording measurements to a predetermined quantity, either the first writer or the second writer is selected to be operational in the data storage device.

  • Patent number: 8736995
Abstract: Method and apparatus for identifying the track pitch capability of a recording device, such as but not limited to a recording system and/or a servo control system in a data storage device. In accordance with some embodiments, data are written to first and second tracks at an initial track pitch such that the second track at least partially overlaps the first track. Data are arranged on the first track in code words each having a fixed plurality of bits which are decoded as a group by a data channel. The code words are transferred from the first track to the data channel, and a final track pitch for subsequent tracks is responsive to a distance at which nominally half of the code words are undecodeable by the data channel.

  • Patent number: 7324309
Abstract: A magnetoresistive read/write head includes an integral top and side shields deposited on top of and substantially surrounding the multiple layers of the MR sensor stack. Such a design is particularly advantageous in CPP designs in which the only spacing necessary between the side shields and the bottom shield is due to a gap layer. The integral top and side shields design works both with CPP heads having pile bias stabilization as well as those having permanent magnet abutted junctions or patterned exchange bias stabilization. In addition, the design is also advantageous in CIP heads having permanent magnet abutted junctions or patterned exchange bias stabilization. In this latter embodiment, it may be possible to reduce the profile of the permanent magnet and any conductors to increase the efficacy of the side shields.

  • Patent number: 6714368
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting data densities on disk surfaces in a disk drive based upon measured thermal decay rates of the disk surfaces is disclosed. First and second data patterns having first and second data densities, respectively, are written onto a first disk surface. The first and second data patterns are read, upon expiration of at least a first predetermined time interval, and first and second thermal decay rates associated with the first and second data patterns, respectively, are calculated. A determination is made as to whether the first and second thermal decay rates, respectively, satisfy first and second thermal decay rate requirements. Finally, a density at which to record data on the first disk surface is selected based upon whether the first thermal decay rate meets the first thermal decay rate requirement and whether the second thermal decay rate meets the second thermal decay rate requirement.
