The QWI output window is transparent to the lasing wavelength ?L. The QWI waveguide portion in the QWI output window is characterized by an energy bandgap that is larger than an energy bandgap of the gain section such that the band gap wavelength ?QWI in the QWI waveguide portion and the QWI output window is shorter than the lasing wavelength ?L. The QWI output window is characterized by a photoluminescent wavelength ?PL. The manufacturing process comprises a ?PL screening protocol that determines laser diode reliability based on a comparison of the lasing wavelength ?L and the photoluminescent wavelength ?PL of the QWI output window.

    Abstract: A method is provided for controlling a DBR laser diode wherein front and rear DBR section heating elements are controlled such that the reflectivity of the rear grating portion of the DBR section is lower than the reflectivity of the front grating portion of the DBR section. In this manner, lasing mode selection is dominated by the front grating portion and the front DBR section heating element can be controlled for wavelength tuning. In addition, the rear DBR section heating element can be controlled to narrow the spectral bandwidth of the DBR reflection spectra. Additional embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

    Abstract: In accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure, a method of evaluating the operating characteristics of a Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) laser diode is provided. According to the method, a diagnostic electrical current is injected into the wavelength tuning section of the DBR laser to generate amplified spontaneous emission of light in the wavelength tuning section. Light emitted from the wavelength tuning section is absorbed by the gain section and photo current generated by the light absorbed in the gain section is measured. The photo current measured in the gain section can be correlated with an evaluation of the operating characteristics of the DBR laser diode. For example, the measured photo current can be correlated with a substandard operating characteristic when it departs from a given photo current metric by more than an acceptable amount. Additional embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

    Abstract: A filter assembly for use in filtering air in an air conditioning system has a water resistant front grille through which air enters the assembly and a water resistant rear grille through which filtered air is exited. The ends of these grilles are not apertured and are bent over and joined together to form a container structure. An air permeable filter element in the form of a pleated or undulating sheet is installed in the container structure, the opposite ends of the pleated sheet being attached to opposing sides of the grilles. The pleated sheet runs between the front and rear grilles and extends from the top to the bottom of the grilles. The filter sheet has a filtering media which may be of fiberglass on the side thereof which faces the front grille and a stiffened backing providing structural support, on the side facing the rear grille. The fiberglass, while passing air resists the passage of liquid therethrough.
