  • Publication number: 20080055883
Abstract: A surface treatment layer containing alkali metal oxide is formed on at least one of substrates to form a body of a surface light source. The surface treatment layer may be formed of oxide by coating at least one of cesium, potassium, rubidium, and compound thereof on the surface of the substrate and by performing heat treatment to the substrate. The surface treatment layer containing alkali metal oxide easily emits secondary electrons and reduces firing voltage of the surface light source. Black start is improved, discharging efficiency is increased, and heat generated during the operation is decreased.

  • Publication number: 20070155275
Abstract: There are provided a method of manufacturing a surface light source device, and an apparatus for manufacturing a surface light source device using the method. According to the method, a light source body including a plurality of discharge spaces into which a discharge gas is injected is formed. Impurities being present in the discharge spaces are removed. A mercury gas is diffused into the discharge spaces. Then, the light source body is rapidly cooled from the temperature at which mercury exists in the gaseous state to a room temperature. The time for the mercury gas to be within the range of temperature at which the mercury gas is liquefied is significantly shortened, thereby preventing the liquefied mercury from moving to the region having a low temperature in the discharge spaces.

  • Publication number: 20060044821
Abstract: A surface light source device includes a light source body having an internal space into which a discharge gas is injected, and an electrode for applying a voltage to the discharge gas. Partition walls are arranged in the internal space to divide the internal space into a plurality of discharge spaces. To reduce areas of the partition walls, a groove is formed at a side face of each partition wall. Thus, each partition wall has a reduced area so that the partition walls may not act as dark fields of the surface light source device.

  • Publication number: 20060006785
Abstract: A surface light source device includes a first substrate, a second substrate and an electrode. The first and second substrate defines a discharge space into which a discharge gas is injected. The electrode applies a voltage to the discharge gas. Any one of the first and second substrates includes a sodalime glass. The sodalime glass includes an ion-exchanging layer containing potassium ions that are ion-exchanged for sodium ions. Since the surface light source device does not have the sodium ions, a discoloring of the surface light source device due to an elution of the sodium ions may be prevented. Further, the sodalime glass may have an enhanced strength.
