  • Patent number: 9118104
Abstract: This is directed to an antenna for use in an electronic device. The antenna can be constructed from a flex and printed trace, such that the flex is originally defined to be as large or nearly as large as possible to fit within portion of the electronic device dedicated to the antenna. This can allow the antenna trace to vary as the antenna is tuned without requiring a new flex having a different shape. In addition, this can allow the antenna design to be decoupled from the mechanical considerations related to mounting the antenna within the electronic device.

  • Patent number: 8923693
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed therein generally pertain to selectively strengthening glass. More particularly, techniques are described for selectively strengthening cover glass, which tends to be thin, for electronic devices, namely, portable electronic devices. In certain embodiments, selectively strengthening glass, such as cover glass, can be used to provide optical barriers (or channels) internal to the glass. The electronic devices can also provide for camera integration behind the cover glass.

  • Patent number: 8879272
Abstract: Multi-part substrate arrangements that yield low profile configurations are disclosed. One aspect pertains to portable electronic devices are able to have low profiles through use of multi-part substrate arrangements. Another aspect pertains to methods for assembling two or more separate substrates into a multi-part substrate. By use of multi-part substrate arrangements according to the invention, portable electronic devices are able to be thinner and more compact.

  • Patent number: 8824162
Abstract: Electronic devices may have housings in which components are mounted. Some of the components may be sensitive to moisture. Other components may be insensitive to moisture and may form openings in a device housing that allow moisture to escape from within the housing. Components may be mounted on substrates such as printed circuit board substrates. Moisture repelling layers and moisture attracting layers may be patterned to form channels and other structures that guide moisture away from sensitive components towards insensitive components. Moisture repelling and attracting layers may also be used to limit the lateral spread of a conformal coating layer when coating components.

  • Patent number: 8766099
Abstract: Sensitive electronic components can be mounted on a printed circuit board within an electronic device. To isolate a sensitive component from stresses that may arise during an unintended impact event, the electronic component can be isolated using a groove in the printed circuit board. The electronic component may be mounted to a component mounting region using solder balls. The component mounting region may be surrounded on some or all sides by the groove. Flex circuit structures that bridge the groove or a portion of the rigid printed circuit board may be used to hold the component mounting region in place. The flex circuit structures may be provided in the form of separate structures or may be provided as an integral portion of the printed circuit board.

  • Patent number: 8724285
Abstract: Techniques or processes for providing markings on products are disclosed. Particular arrangements of input devices may provide enhancements in ease of use. Further, cosmetic laser marking of input devices may provide improved visual appearance. Additionally, selectively controlling laser operation parameters during laser marking may provide laser marking that may be substantially electrically conductive, which in turn may be helpful in electrostatic discharge protection.
