    Abstract: An E8-VSB reception system, apparatus for generating data attribute and method thereof, and apparatus for channel encoding and method thereof are disclosed. In the present invention, E8-VSB data resulting from multiplexing a plurality of enhanced data encoded at different coding rates with main data is received. And, the main data and a plurality of the enhanced data are identified to be modulated from the received E8-VSB data. In particular, by generating M/E packet attribute information, enhanced packet attribute information, enhanced byte attribute information and E8-VSB symbol attribute information from the E8-VSB data attribute generating apparatus, the channel decoding apparatus can correctly identify to decode the main data, ½ enhanced data and ¼ enhanced data from one another.

    Abstract: A digital television transmitter and a method of coding main and enhanced data in the digital television transmitter are disclosed. In the digital television transmitter, a byte-symbol converter converts main and enhanced data packets into symbols, wherein at least one of the enhanced data packets may include data place holders for known data symbols. A known data generator generates a known data symbol. A symbol processor processes a first symbol outputted from the byte-symbol converter. Herein, the symbol processor may post-decode a first bit of the known data symbol and output the post-decoded bit and an initialization data bit when the first symbol is a symbol representing one of the place holders. A trellis encoder has one or more memories for trellis-encoding a second symbol outputted from the symbol processor, wherein the memories are initialized when the initialization data bit is processed in the trellis encoder.

A first multiplexer multiplexes the enhanced data packets with main data packets including the main data. An RS encoder RS-codes the multiplexed main and enhanced data packets, the RS encoder adding systematic parity data to each main data packet and adding RS parity place holders to each enhanced data packet. And, a data interleaver interleaves the RS-coded main and enhanced data packets, wherein a known data sequence is included in every Nth enhanced data segment outputted from the data interleaver.

    Abstract: A method of processing a digital broadcast signal includes Reed-Solomon (RS) encoding enhanced service data for each column of at least one RS frame payload and adding a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) checksum byte at a right end of each row of the at least one RS frame payload to build at least one RS frame and forming data groups including the enhanced service data in the built RS frame and a plurality of known data sequences. Forming the data groups includes mapping the RS encoded enhanced service data into each of the data groups and inserting a place holder for a non-systematic RS parity into each of the data groups. The method further includes deinterleaving data in each of the data groups including the enhanced service data and the place holder and multiplexing the enhanced service data in each of the formed data groups with main service data.

The second transformer converts the average value into frequency domain data. The coefficient calculator calculates equalization coefficients using the average value, and the compensator compensates channel distortion of each normal data block using the coefficients. The third transformer converts the compensated data block into time domain data.

The reception system also includes a modified legacy VSB receiver for processing the data received from the VSB transmission system in a reverse order of the VSB transmission system by using the sequence, and a demultiplexer for demultiplexing the data from the modified legacy VSB receiver into the MPEG data and the supplemental data. The VSB reception system also includes a supplemental data processor for processing the supplemental data segment from the demultiplexer in a reverse order of the transmission system, to obtain the supplemental data, thereby carrying out the slicer prediction, decoding, and symbol decision more accurately by using the predefined sequence, to improve a performance.

When ½ enhanced data coded at a rate of ½ and ¼ enhanced data at a rate of ¼ are transmitted, timing jitter in MPEG of VSB receiver can be reduced and the size of input buffer in MPEG decoder of the VSB receiver can be reduced by multiplexing the ½ enhanced data packet and the ¼ data packet at predetermined intervals. Multiplexing the ½ enhanced data packet and the ¼ data packet by grouping increases the reception performance of the ¼ enhanced data. Multiplexing the ½ enhanced data packet and the ¼ data packet alternatively reduces the MPEG timing jitter in the VSB receiver and increases the reception performance of the ¼ enhanced data.

The received DTV signal is demodulated including performing channel equalization on the demodulated DTV signal. Trellis decoding is performed on the channel-equalized DTV signal.
