  • Patent number: 11764603
Abstract: A smart circuit breaker includes a communication interface, separable contacts, a processing unit having a memory with a routine stored therein which, when executed by the processing unit causes the processing unit to: sense a power outage in an electrical grid, control a meter to open contacts to disconnect from the electrical grid, sense power restoration to the electrical grid, control contacts corresponding to a secondary power source to open, control the meter to close contacts to reconnect to the electrical grid, sense that a frequency of power from the electrical grid matches a frequency of power from the secondary power source, and control the contacts corresponding to the secondary power source to close.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 11, 2021
Date of Patent: September 19, 2023
    Assignee: EATON INTELLIGENT POWER LIMITED
Inventors: Patrick T. Walsh, Todd F. Lottmann, Lanson D. Relyea, Ryan F. Brager, Kaytee Johnson

  • Patent number: 9036318
Abstract: A method of tripping a circuit interrupter in a back fed configuration is provided, wherein the circuit interrupter has separable contacts and an actuator, such as a solenoid, operatively coupled to the separable contacts. The method includes detecting within the circuit interrupter that a fault condition exists, and subsequent to detecting that the fault condition exists, determining whether a current is flowing within the circuit interrupter between a load side of the circuit interrupter and the separable contacts, and controlling operation of the actuator based on whether the current is flowing within the circuit interrupter.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 9, 2013
Date of Patent: May 19, 2015
    Assignee: Eaton Corporation
