  • Patent number: 4929589
Abstract: An active material is disclosed comprising metal oxide/hydroxide particles having chemically bonded to reactive sites on a surface thereof, a monolayer of a phosphorous-containing organic material comprised of a phosphorous-containing group and a carbon-containing group. The bond to the metal oxide/hydroxide particle surface is formed by reaction of the phosphorous-containing group with the metal oxide/hydroxide particle surface, so that the carbon-containing group of the material is oriented away from the metal oxide/hydroxide surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 2, 1989
Date of Patent: May 29, 1990
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Edward S. Martin, Larry F. Wieserman
  • Patent number: 4904634
Abstract: An active material is disclosed comprising a metal oxide/hydroxide surface having chemically bonded to reactive sites thereon, a monolayer of a phosphorus-containing organic material comprised of a phosphorus-containing group and a carbon-containing group. The bond to the metal oxide/hydroxide surface is formed by reaction of the phosphorus-containing group with the metal oxide/hydroxide surface, so that the carbon-containing group of the material is oriented away from the metal oxide/hydroxide surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 31, 1988
Date of Patent: February 27, 1990
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Larry F. Wieserman, Karl Wefers, Kathryn Cross, Edward S. Martin

  • Patent number: 4786628
Abstract: A chromatographic packing material is disclosed comprising a metal oxide/hydroxide particle having chemically bonded to reactive sites on a surface thereof, a monolayer of one or more phosphonic acids. The bond to the metal oxide/hydroxide surface is formed by reaction of the phosphorous-containing group of the phosphonic acid with the metal oxide/hydroxide surface, so that the carbon-containing or non-polar group of the phosphonic acid is oriented away from the metal oxide/hydroxide surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 9, 1987
Date of Patent: November 22, 1988
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America

  • Patent number: 4781982
Abstract: Mineral particles are surface treated with an alkali metal silicate, hydrogen peroxide, an acid, or an organophosphorus compound. A preferred surface treating method utilizes sodium silicate in aqueous solution at pH greater than 9, followed by neutralization with acid to precipitate a silica coating onto surface portions of the particles. The mineral particles are preferably alumina particles. The surface-treated alumina particles may be incorporated into fluoride dentifrices or compounded with halogenated hydrocarbons and polymeric resins to form flame-retardant polymer compounds.

Date of Patent: November 1, 1988
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Lawrence L. Musselman, Larry F. Wieserman
