    Abstract: A waste toner removal system for an image forming device. The invention includes a mechanism for removing the waste toner from the cartridge and transporting it through a toner chute to a waste toner tank. One or more actuators within the device allow for the connection between the various elements to seal the waste toner path and prevent toner leakage. Methods of moving waste toner are also disclosed that include moving the waste toner through the cartridge and into a waste toner chute. The waste toner is moved through the chute and into a waste toner tank where it may be removed from the device.

    Abstract: An image forming device having a main body and a movable subunit. The subunit is movable between a first orientation and a second orientation. A developer member is positioned within the main body, and a photoconductive member is positioned on the subunit. In the first orientation, the developer member and photoconductive member are spaced apart. In the second orientation, the photoconductive member is positioned either in contact with or closely located to the developer member. Image formation occurs when the subunit is in the second orientation as toner is transferred from the developer member to the photoconductive member. Methods of using the image forming device include positioning the developer member in the main body and the photoconductive member on the subunit, and moving the subunit from a first orientation to a second orientation such that image formation can occur.

    Abstract: In an image forming apparatus containing a plurality of rollers disposed with generally parallel axes, a retraction plate containing a plurality of rotational couplings is movable between engaged and retracted positions. Each rotational coupling is operative to transmit a rotary force to each cartridge when the retraction plate is in the engaged position. The couplings move laterally in an axial direction of the rollers as the retraction plate moves between the engaged and retracted positions, in response to an applied force. In one embodiment, the retraction plate is rotated about a pivot point to move the couplings between engaged and retracted positions. In another embodiment, the retraction plate is translated laterally in the axial direction of the couplings.

    Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes a waste toner system that collects waste toner in a waste toner container. An amount of waste toner collected in the container is increased by using a motor-driven toner distributing member that distributes accumulated toner within the container. The waste toner system may detect the accumulation of waste toner by monitoring a motor control circuit while the toner distributing member is being driven. For example, the system may detect excess accumulation by comparing the monitored values of a speed control signal with one or more reference values corresponding to nominal accumulation conditions. Whether or not the motor is speed controlled, the apparatus may use a shared motor that drives one or more image forming process members and the toner distributing member. A drive arrangement may be used to selectively drive the toner distributing member based on motor direction to avoid interfering with image forming operations.

    Abstract: A biasing mechanism in an image forming apparatus exerts a variable force on a removable cartridge unit to generate a nip force between a roller in the cartridge unit and another roller. A pivot member is fixed to the apparatus housing. An arm is pivotally mounted in the housing about the pivot member, with the arm in contact with a protrusion on the cartridge unit. A force generating member is mounted in the housing and contacts the arm so as to urge the arm to pivot about the pivot member and press against the cartridge unit. The resulting force exerted on the cartridge unit by the arm varies according to the point of contact between the cartridge unit and the arm. In some embodiments, the arm and the cartridge unit protrusion are electrically conductive, and an electrical contact is established as the arm is pressed against the protrusion.

    Abstract: An assembly for limiting axial motion of a shaft, such as a roller, in an imaging apparatus having a frame, a drive system including a helical drive gear, a shaft supported by the frame and a driven helical gear attached to the shaft and positioned to engage the helical drive gear, wherein driving the driven helical gear in a first rotational direction results in an axial thrust of the shaft in a first axial direction. The assembly includes a thrust member which has an engagement end and a mounting end. The engagement end has a first cross-sectional dimension and the mounting end has a second cross-sectional dimension that is larger than the first cross-sectional dimension. The thrust member is positioned to be co-axial with the shaft and is coupled to at least one of the shaft and the driven helical gear. A thrust bracket is mounted to the frame.

    Abstract: A method of aligning a laser printhead in an electrophotographic machine includes providing a fixture with a pair of fixed sensors. The fixed sensors are spaced apart along a length of a first fixture drum axis. Each of the fixed sensors is fixed relative to a second of the fixed drums. The first fixture drum is provided with a pair of floating sensors. The floating sensors are spaced apart along the length of the first fixture drum axis. Each of the floating sensors is fixed relative to the first fixture drum. A laser beam from the laser printhead is scanned across an outside surface of the first fixture drum, the fixed sensors and the floating sensors. An intersection of the scanned laser beam and the outside surface of the first drum defines a scan path. A first skew of the scan path relative to an axis of the first drum is measured using the floating sensors. A second skew of the scan path relative to an axis of the second drum is measured using the fixed sensors.

Printer control avoids printing to a media free printzone by sensing for the presence of a sheet of recording media within a nip between the primary and secondary feed rolls and selectively enabling and disabling the printer in accordance with the sensed media presence. The transverse dimension of a sheet of recording media may be estimated by multiple sensors and printer carriage travel limited to less than the estimated dimension.

Each of the side walls has a U-shaped housing (35, 247) which loosely receives a pin (37a, 37b) from the side of the hopper (61). The hopper is part of a unitary assembly holding the toner adder roller (45) and the developer roller (43). Second pins (131a, 131b) from the sides of the hopper carry springs which pull the two assemblies together to press the developer roller against the photoconductor. The hopper also has flat ledges (161a, 133a) on each side for movement on roller in the printer. This further permits the cartridge to have central locating elements (29a, 29b), wing-like guides (9a, 9b) for insertion, links (13a, 13b) to open a lower shutter (7), and unobstructed ends of photoconductor shaft (47) for positively locating on that shaft.

The hopper assembly has center locating surfaces (29a, 29b) to receive a downward pressing member from the printer and flat ledges (161a, 133a) to contact rollers in the printer, which permits adjustment of the contact between the drum and the developer roller while positively locating the drum. The cover assembly also has flat locating surfaces (449, 451) near the hopper to rest on the printer frame.

    Abstract: The door (3) of a laser printer (1) is pivoted to the frame (1c) of the printer by a pin (21) of hinge (19). When the door is shut, link (33) is rotatably connected to the hinge at a location above the pin. Link 33 has an elongated slot (33a) at its end opposite the hinge in which a pin (51) does not encounter the edge of the slot when the door is closed. Spring (31) therefore rotates U shaped link 11 around its pivot point (15) to the frame to bring charge roller (9) into contact with photoconductor drum (5). When the door is manually opened, spring 31 provides an upward force, link 33 is moved forward where the slot engages pin 51, which pivots both link 13 and door 3 upward. Force of the charge roller against the drum is by the spring as the only active element, thereby providing a controlled force.
