Patent number: 9933959Abstract: A method and computer program product are provided to ensure a timely secure data erase by comparing a number of secure data erase operations in a queue to a maximum queued threshold, the secure data erase operations corresponding to physical volumes to be secure data erased. In response to determining that the number of secure data erase operations in the queue is greater than the threshold, an average time to a secure data erase deadline is determined. The average time to the secure data erase deadline is compared to a predefined expiration threshold. In response to determining that the average time to the secure data erase deadline is less than the predefined expiration threshold, at least one additional resource is allocated to perform the queued secure data erase operations for completing the secure data erase operations prior to the secure data erase deadline.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2016Date of Patent: April 3, 2018Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Gregory Tad Kishi, Mark Allan Norman, Laura Jean Ostasiewski, Christopher Michael Sansone

Patent number: 9542109Abstract: A method and computer program product are provided to ensure a timely secure data erase by determining an erasure deadline for each physical volume of a plurality of physical volumes and calculating a remaining time for each physical volume. The remaining time is calculated for each physical volume by comparing a current date to the erasure deadline of each physical volume respectively. A secure data erase is performed on the plurality of physical volumes in an order based on the calculated remaining time, where the secure data erase is performed on the physical volume with a shortest calculated remaining time first.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2015Date of Patent: January 10, 2017Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Gregory Tad Kishi, Mark Allan Norman, Laura Jean Ostasiewski, Christopher Michael Sansone

Patent number: 9141303Abstract: A method and computer program product are provided to ensure a timely secure data erase by determining an erasure deadline for each physical volume of a plurality of physical volumes and calculating a remaining time for each physical volume. The remaining time is calculated for each physical volume by comparing a current date to the erasure deadline of each physical volume respectively. The physical volumes may then be sorted based on the remaining time and the physical volume with a shortest calculated remaining time will be selectively secure data erased.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2007Date of Patent: September 22, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Gregory Tad Kishi, Mark Allan Norman, Laura Jean Ostasiewski, Christopher Michael Sansone

Patent number: 8516297Abstract: A copy export application implemented in a computational device receives a request to perform a copy export operation of data and metadata to a selected tape in a tape library coupled to the computational device. The copy export application copies the data from the computational device to the selected tape. The copy export application determines a medium error on the selected tape while copying the metadata from the computational device to the selected tape, subsequent to completion of the copying of the data from the computational device to the selected tape. The copy export application sends a request to a tape control application to replace the selected tape by a new tape and copy the data from the selected tape to the new tape. The copy export application copies the metadata to the new tape.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2012Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Norie Iwasaki, David Michael Morton, Yun Mou, Laura Jean Ostasiewski, Takeshi Sohda

Patent number: 7590812Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for archiving log data. In one embodiment, an allocation module allocates a plurality of log logical volumes in a storage pool for storing copies of log instances. The log logical volumes may be hidden from a user. A log module records log data to at least one first log instance in a cache. A copy module transparently copies the at least one first log instance to a first log logical volume of a plurality of log logical volumes in a storage pool when a copy policy is satisfied. The log module further records the log data to at least one second log instance in the cache, overwriting the at least one first log instance. In one embodiment, a selection module selects a second log logical volume of the plurality of log logical volumes to receive the copied at least one second log instance if the first log logical volume satisfies a wrap policy.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2006Date of Patent: September 15, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: David Alan Brettell, Gregory Tad Kishi, Laura Jean Ostasiewski
