  • Patent number: 5474506
Abstract: A multiple ratio automatic transmission having a hydrokinetic torque converter in an automotive vehicle driveline wherein the torque converter has a controllable bypass clutch and wherein provision is made for changing the clutch capacity during a ratio change to reduce undesirable torque fluctuations in the driveline, thus improving shift quality while maintaining optimum hydrodynamic torque converter efficiency.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 18, 1994
Date of Patent: December 12, 1995
    Assignee: Ford Motor Company
Inventors: Bruce J. Palansky, Thomas L. Greene, John A. Daubenmier, Gavin F. McCall, Lawrence H. Buch, Paul F. Smith
  • Patent number: 5413539
Abstract: An electronically controlled multiply ratio transmission for an automotive vehicle powertrain having a hydrokinetic torque converter with a bypass clutch, solenoid operated shift valves under the control of an electronic microprocessor that receives signals from an output shaft speed sensor, an engine speed sensor, a driver controlled drive range selector position, an engine throttle position sensor, and other powertrain operating variables, the bypass clutch having a controlled slip characteristic.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 26, 1994
Date of Patent: May 9, 1995
    Assignee: Ford Motor Company

  • Patent number: 5331936
Abstract: A mass airflow based control system for an internal combustion engine is provided which is capable of inferring cylinder air charge during non-steady state periods of operation of the engine. The control system infers cylinder air charge from values of rotational engine speed, air mass flow inducted into the engine, inlet air temperature, engine coolant temperature, and barometric pressure. The control system employs the inferred cylinder air charge value for air/fuel ratio control.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 10, 1993
Date of Patent: July 26, 1994
    Assignee: Ford Motor Company
Inventors: Isis A. Messih, Lawrence H. Buch, Michael J. Cullen
  • Patent number: 5305663
Abstract: An electrically controlled multiple ratio transmission for an automotive vehicle powertrain having a hydrokinetic torque converter with a bypass clutch, solenoid operated shift valves under the control of an electronic microprocessor that receives signals from an output shaft speed sensor, an engine speed sensor, a driver controlled drive range selector position, an engine throttle position sensor, and other powertrain operating variables, the solenoid shift valves forming a part of a simplified control valve circuit having a minimum number of shift valve elements and simplified circuit pressure modifier elements for effecting optimum pressures in fluid pressure operated servos for the transmission clutches and brakes during ratio changes, the bypass clutch having a controlled slip characteristic.

  • Patent number: 4823266
Abstract: Controlling the speed of an engine used with an automatic transmission to reduce tip in jerk includes determining any difference between transmission gearset speed and engine speed. Engine speed is increased if it is below transmission gearset speed so as to reduce any speed differential between the engine and transmission gearset.
