Patent number: 8608695Abstract: A safety needle assembly has a collar or ring that is rotatably mounted to a needle hub. The needle assembly may be connected to a syringe by the user grasping the needle hub in first and second embodiments, or turning of the needle sheath in other embodiments. The collar of the needle assembly may be rotated by turning the needle sheath. The needle hub may also interact with the collar by rotating the needle sheath. Mechanisms are provided at both the collar and the housing so that once the contaminated needle is covered, the needle assembly may be removed from the syringe for disposal by rotating the needle housing.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2012Date of Patent: December 17, 2013Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventors: Marius Hauri, Frank Blinkhorn, David MacLean, Lawrence P. Hudon, Robert Simas, Jr., Troy M. Derby

Patent number: 8251961Abstract: A safety needle assembly has a needle hub and a collar. Integrally formed from the proximal portion of the needle hub is a ring that surrounds its luer base. At the distal portion of the needle hub there are coaxially formed circumferential flanges which act to allow the collar to be rotatable about the needle hub. A needle protection housing is connected to the collar and is pivotable to cover the needle that extends from the distal end of the needle hub. Before use, the needle extending from the needle hub is covered by a needle sheath that has a groove formed circumferentially at its proximal end that snap-fits to a circumferential rib formed at the distal end of the collar.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 2003Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventors: Marius Hauri, Frank Blinkhorn, David Maclean, Lawrence P. Hudon, Robert Simas, Jr., Troy M. Derby

Patent number: 8152761Abstract: A safety needle assembly has a collar or ring that is rotatably mounted to a needle hub, which may be connected to a medical device such as a syringe. The needle assembly may be connected to the syringe by the user grasping the needle hub in first and second embodiments, or turning of the needle sheath in other embodiments. In all of the embodiments, the collar of the needle assembly may be rotated by turning the needle sheath, which is designed to interact with the collar. In some of the embodiments, the needle hub likewise interacts with the collar in such a way that by rotating the needle sheath, the needle hub is likewise rotated for connection to a syringe. When an exposed needle is to be covered, after the needle sheath has been removed, a housing connected to the collar is pivotally moved to cover the needle.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2004Date of Patent: April 10, 2012Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventors: Marius Hauri, Frank Blinkhorn, David MacLean, Lawrence P. Publication number: 20090206514Abstract: To enable a user to readily determine the gauge of the needle of a needle assembly that has a base and a needle protective housing pivotably attached thereto, the needle assembly is injection molded from a color coded molding material which color was preassigned to correspond to the gauge of the needle. As a result, both the base and the protective housing of the needle assembly are the same specific color, and reflect or provide an indication of the given gauge of the needle. The needle sheath that covers the needle prior to use may be made of a plastics material that may be clear, or have the same or a different color than that of the needle assembly.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 17, 2009Publication date: August 20, 2009Applicant: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventors: David MacLean, Frank Blinkhorn, Troy M. Derby, Quinton Farrar, Marius Hauri, Lawrence P. Hudon, Robert Simas, JR.

Patent number: 7156825Abstract: To retrofit a conventional needle hub assembly with a needle protection housing, a sleeve having a collar rotatably fitted thereabout is fitted to the needle hub. The sleeve has a proximal portion and a distal portion. The proximal portion has a diameter that is dimensioned to fit over the needle hub while the distal portion has a diameter that allows the needle cap of the needle hub assembly to be inserted thereinto so as to be frictionally coupled to the needle hub. There are a plurality of flanges or ears extending at the proximal end of the proximal portion. These flanges are configured to overlie the flanges formed at the base of the needle hub used to mate with the luer of a syringe. When the needle hub assembly is threadingly mated to the luer of the syringe, the sleeve, along with the collar mounted thereabout and to which the needle protection housing is attached, is also mated to the luer.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2003Date of Patent: January 2, 2007Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventor: Lawrence P. Patent number: 7156827Abstract: By interposing an adapter between the endotracheal or tracheal tube inserted to a patient and the ventilation and suction systems that are connected to the endotracheal tube, a catheter could be inserted via an input port built into the adapter so as to enable a medical personnel to provide localized treatments in the lungs of a patient without having to disconnect either one of the systems connected to the endotracheal tube. The adapter is configured to have a securing mechanism that allows the medical personnel to secure the medication catheter in place. A one way valve fitted to the apertured arm that forms the input port of the adapter prevents any back flow of fluid from the input port.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2003Date of Patent: January 2, 2007Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventors: Richard McNary, Lawrence P. Hudon, Louis Woo, Roddi J. Simpson

Patent number: 6951551Abstract: A needle protection device for a vial, or capsule, has a housing hingedly or flexibly connected to a needle collar by a hinge. The collar has a main portion configured to fit about at least a portion of the body of the vial and an extension configured to fit about at least a portion of the neck of the vial. A needle hub, movable along the neck of the vial and to which a needle extends, is interposed between the body and neck of the vial. The hub has a skirt portion that could be moved along the neck of the vial for capping or overlapping the extension of the collar to thereby non-removably secure the collar to the vial. An improved syringe assembly is effected when a vial of the instant invention is placed within a vial holder applicator, such as for example a CARPUJET applicator.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2002Date of Patent: October 4, 2005Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventor: Lawrence P. Hudon
