  • Patent number: 6792141
Abstract: A system and method for processing digital video. The invention allows for manual level and gain adjustment of the video similar to that used in a histogram based automatic level and gain control system using a cumulative distribution function. Level changes are made by an offset to the existing automatic level and gain. Level changes are first made by applying an offset L and the midscale gray intensity bin on the histogram is located. Gain changes are made by changing the relative gain multiplier (G) which acts on the automatic level and gain algorithm causing the gain to change equally about midscale gray (i.e., midscale gray is maintained). In accordance with the invention, as part of the histogram based manual level and gain algorithm, the local gain is clipped to a predetermined maximum in order to prevent an overly noisy picture when too much gain is applied. The inventive method determines how to prevent a shift in the level when increasing the gain (i.e., G>1) even when clipping is applied.

  • Patent number: 6737639
Abstract: A method and system for maintaining uniformity in a FLIR display. During a one-time initialization procedure, a plurality of dynamic ranges are defined by covering a specific range of bucket fill levels when in a certain gain. To cover all dynamic ranges possible, a plurality of pairs of responsivity equalization (RE) calibrations (each pair producing a RE set of pixel gain corrections) are also accomplished in the same one time initialization period. A plurality of corresponding level equalization (LE) calibrations (each using the appropriate calibrated RE set and producing a LE set of pixel level corrections) for each anticipated dynamic range are made at every power-up initialization. Each of the calibrations is done with respect to a thermal reference source to produce a uniform scene at the desired bucket fill level.

  • Patent number: 5479025
Abstract: A boresight thermal reference source capable of rapidly providing a uniform high intensity Infra-Red signal, comprises a boresight source housing, a ceramic rod, and a heater wire helically surrounding, at least partially, the ceramic rod. The coiled heater wire has a plurality of turns extending outwardly from one end of the ceramic rod forming a blackbody cavity therein from the plurality of outwardly extending turns on the end of the ceramic rod. The small mass of the ceramic rod, optimum geometry of ceramic rod, heater wire, and housing for reduced heat loss, and the aforementioned blackbody cavity configuration, all provide for low operating power with uniform rapid heating of one end (ceramic floor) of the ceramic rod to about 1000.degree.
