  • Publication number: 20160187270
Abstract: A long-range method and a system for reliably detecting and identifying special nuclear materials is provided that relies on the emission of delayed neutrons present in the decay of fission products (delayed neutron precursors) as a unique signature for the special nuclear materials, such as highly enriched uranium (235/238U). The method relies on a time-of-flight measurement in the first 1 ?s after the inducing radiation pulse, and pulse height data analysis for both neutrons and gamma rays that can be done at a much higher data rate than in traditional pulse processing systems. The thermal neutron fission within the time regime of 100-500 ?s provides a unique signature of special nuclear materials such as the highly enriched uranium.

  • Patent number: 6925137
Abstract: A neutron generator includes a modular arrangement of a high current electron bombardment ion source, providing deuterium(D) and/or tritium(T) ions, a high voltage acceleration stage to accelerate the ions and raise the ion energy to the order of 100 keV, and an occluded reaction target containing T and/or D to produce the nuclear reactions. Neutrons are produced in the target using the D—D and/or D-T reaction. The invention is designed to allow the target to be located at the end of a needle and thereby is useful for treating cancers by the Brachy therapy method. The ion source of the neutron generator is a modified version of the electron bombardment type used in mass spectrometers for gas analysis. This source uses an electron beam running through an ionization chamber to ionize gas molecules that are extracted out of the chamber by electric fields.

  • Patent number: 5723862
Abstract: A small radii mass spectrometer that utilizes high energy density permanent magnets of greater than 10E7 GOe for focusing an ion trajectory. The ion optical path employs focusing of the parallel component of the beam emitted by the source such that the momentum selected beam is focused in 90.degree. geometry at or near the exit pole face. The width of the beam at the focal point is independent of the size of the beam exiting the ion source in first order but has a second order aberration term dependent on the source width and radius of curvature. The dominant terms in determining the collected beam width are the angular divergence of the source (which can be reduced by defining slit) and the energy spread of the ion beam. A second magnet may be used in tandem with the first magnet to cancel the second order aberration term and reduces the background created by ions scattering with residual gas molecules in the vacuum chamber.
