  • Patent number: 9522826
Abstract: An apparatus for mixing a vaporized precursor with a gas for producing silica particles is provided. The apparatus includes a mixer housing, a precursor delivery chamber having an output in communication with the mixer housing for delivering a vaporized precursor in the mixer housing, and an oxidizing gas delivery chamber having an output in communication with the mixer housing for delivering an oxidizing gas to be mixed with the vaporized precursor. The apparatus further includes a flashback member disposed within the mixer housing and between the output of the precursor delivery chamber and the output of the oxidizing gas delivery chamber. The flashback member is located at a minimum distance from the output of the oxidizing gas delivery chamber defined by Lminimum (cm)=0.453U (Re)?0.5567, wherein U is the flow rate in cm/sec of precursor and Re is the flow Reynolds number. The flashback member may include a tapered surface on at least one side to reduce recirculation of vaporized gas.

  • Patent number: 6005139
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved process for reacting a halogenated ester with an alkali metal alkoxide to form an alkoxy ester and a salt. A solvent is added to the halogenated ester prior to the addition of the alkali metal alkoxide. This results in a substantial increase in the particle size of the salt which greatly facilitates its separation from the solution of the alkoxy ester product.

  • Patent number: 5198096
Abstract: Method of modifying a polycarbonate surface to improve adhesion of a metal layer thereon and to the articles produced therefrom. The surface is first rendered hydrophilic by an exposure to actinic light such as ultraviolet light. The surface is then impregnated with a diffuser such as hydrochloric acid. The surface after impregnation is etched with a base such as potassium hydroxide and cleaned by oxidizing it with a solution of an oxidizing agent such as potassium permanganate. The cleaned surface is then neutralized by contacting it with a mild reducing agent. The chemically and physically modified surface is electrolessly plated with a primary metal layer. A secondary metal layer is then electrolessly or electrolytically applied on top of the primary metal layer until a metal layer of a desired thickness is attained.
